PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided ask the army for help in a polio eradication drive in the tribal areas.

In the first phase, the personals of the army, frontier corps and frontier constabulary will work with health officials in all the tribal areas.

The federal government and international bodies both are concerned over new polio cases especially from FATA.

From 104 new polio cases country wide, some 74 occurred in tribal areas where terrorist activities halted the anti-polio campaign for many years and where polio cases are now on the rise.

If i am not wrong awhile back when WHO(??) wanted to vaccinate the kids in that region, the mullahs started a conspiracy saying that it was against islam or something like that, i dont remember what exactly they said. hope this time the army force their way and vaccinate the poor kids.

Same in India, poor Muslims were told that it is conspiracy of govt.
I have seen some advt by Govt in which a mullah tells everybody that polio vaccine is safe.

Thanks @MadDog... I really feel helpless when I find people like this who are against the scientific and medical advancements to save someone's life. Literacy is the key, but even more than that I guess the key lies in educating these idiots about the benefits of modern medicine. Illiterate people will still keep following these so called religious leaders and it may take a generation or two for them to realize what is right for them.

We still have a lot of people in rural pockets throughout India who risk the lives of little children by denying them basic healthcare and instead relying on witchcraft. I feel more than the army get the NGO's and Govt agencies involved in educating these people.

hell, no it has nothing to do with the Quran. most of the mullahs are stupid bigots and once they mix their own tribal culture with it, that makes it even more stupid. I have worked in villages of Afghanistan quite alot, we used to build irrigation structures, roads, culverts, bridges etc, and on top of that we had educational and health care programme which had a massive impact on people's lives, but in case of education and healthcare, they(taliban and local mullahs) didnt allow us to push for girls' schools and in health care we had more problem, because they considered everything unislamic, as a matter of fact it had nothing to do with islam, they were just concerend about their tribal culture. For example we had gathered in a mosque to tell the local people about our programmes, our health and educaiton workers explained everyting to people that we would build structures for them as well as the other programmes, when we proposed them to train the local women as midwives to save mothers and babies lives(mother and baby have high rate of birth death in afghanistan especially in rural areas), the mullah who was also a member of the taliban group stood up and in really harsh words condemned us and indirectly called us Be Ghairat(because we wanted midwifery programme), the local people despite the fact that all wanted that programme had to keep quite----they didnt dare to speak against the mullah. we had to leave the village, poor women and babies. So, the same thing happend in pakistan. but hope this time PA shut the mouth of these bigots as they only know the language of force.

Exactly same in india. How funny, are mullahs same on both side of border.
The situation is a bit different in poorer( northern) part of India where they have much higher say than any other leader. Pakistanis can laugh at them, we cant.
