Hi all,

I hope this doesn't come off as showing off because that's really not the case. I just wanted to share that I recently completed my post grad certificate in counter-terrorism studies and political violence. I feel so happy, I learnt a lot from some of the very insightful threads on PDF and I hope to help contribute in the near future (work life permitting).

I actually learnt about the Hilal Magazine and PIPS Database as well as NACTA from PDF and many of these excellent sources were helpful in my research. My only message to friends on PDF is to be more tolerant of people of different faiths and if the moderators truly want PDF to flourish as an authority on defence matters, they must curb the trolling from all sides.

Thank you everyone who made my time here fun.

Regards,

Gabriel.

What is the difference between terrorism and political violence?

What is the difference between terrorism and political violence?

Thank you, and that is a good question.

Commonly, terrorism and violence against civilians is a way for the terrorist to bring attention to their cause, belief or injustice. Often times, this is done to put pressure on whatever political system is in place to react and or change as a result. Killing innocent people and noncombatants is thought of as a way to scare a population into demanding change so as to avoid future attacks. By doing this, terrorist gain political power and in a way gain support for their cause even by people who do not necessarily agree or have the same views.

Terrorism differs in other respects from political violence in that political violence usually is produced and directed between political forces such as nation verses nation and military verses military. Political violence may result due to the emergence or abolishment of a political system i.e. Arab Spring.

Can you make this out in an example?

Can you make this out in an example?

Yes of course a classic example historically would be the Red Army Faction of West Germany.

Contemporary examples are splinter factions of ISIS, ISIS-K, TTP, FARC, Tamil Tigers. AQN, Al Aqsa Brigade etc.

I remember once we fought together against a flat-earther :lol:
Haha yup :).
