NEW DELHI: A team-based golf event inspired by cricket’s Indian Premier League and starring a host of major winners tees off today, with organisers hoping the ‘snappy’ format will attract new fans to the sport.
British Open winner Darren Clarke and two-time major champion Angel Cabrera, are among those taking part in the Golf Premier League franchise at the Aamby Valley golf course near the western Indian city of Pune over three days.
The televised $400,000 floodlit tournament will feature eight teams of four players battling it out over three stroke play rounds of 14 holes, rather than the four rounds of 18 holes seen in most tour events.
Each team will comprise two players who have made a mark at international level, an Asian Tour star and an upcoming player, all selected at an auction held in Mumbai last month.

Its about supporting a sport, bringing in international audience, tv rights if you see good golfers known in world competing against each other and advertisement money.

People said same thing about Formula 1. Its part of a good strategy to make India a good hub of another sport like cricket.

@ChennaiSKing Great pics buddy. Thanks for this thread. Tell us more about the venue. Its breath taking.

Below is some information about this golf course

2700 feet above sea level, nestled in the hills, set in a 10,000 acre project development, the Aamby valley golf course is often spoken about in hushed tones. No wonder it had been voted & judged as the top course in the country in 2005 & is a must play course. It’s a course which challenges you to think & play each hole. Immaculately maintained with world class training & practice facilities the course is a visual delight & a challenge.

Located amongst the Western Ghats & spread over 250 acres the 18 hole championship course is a 7087 yard, Par 72 layout designed by David. Hemstock(UK). It was later remodeled by PGA Design consulting (UK) to make it a championship layout. It is part of the Aamby valley city which is a 10000 acre oasis. With mountains & hills surrounding the course on all sides and a vast expanse of lakes within, the air here is crisp and fresh.

The front 9 has a different DNA from the back nine – with hazards running across the fairways. The back 9 has more water bodies in store. There is a plethora of wildlife – expect a variety of birds, peacocks and the occasional deer. With a world class clubhouse, pro shop & a training academy the Aamby Valley Golf Course is an experience which is unique.

The Championship golf course is a fully flood lit 18 holes facility and was rated the Best in India for 2004-2005 by Professional Golfer’s Association of India. The facility boasts of a state-of-the-art Golf Academy certified by British PGA. With 24 Practice Bays and 3 Air Conditioned Teaching Bays housing GASP Teaching Software which incidentally is the first of its kind in Asia, the Academy is certainly a trend setter. The Academy operations are handled by Indian Pros.
