Agreement for the linking Gwadar & Chabahar ports is a very interesting development brokered by Chinese. Rumors are that Russia may also join this and some kind of formal agreement would be signed during the upcoming Chinese president's visit to Pakistan. Realignments in the region are inevitable.

Diplomats for strong linkage between Gwadar, Chabahar ports
News Desk: AUGUST 25, 2020

The cooperation between Iran’s Chabahar and Pakistan’s Gwadar ports would enhance ties between the two countries, a group of diplomats and experts on foreign relations from Pakistan and Iran said.

According to a report published by Gwadar Pro, they stressed the use of capacities of regional economic organizations to strengthen bilateral and multilateral relations.

The diplomats and experts expressed the views during the Webinar “Iran-Pakistan Economic Partnership in the Post-Corona era” hosted by Golden Ring Economic Federation (GREF) in Lahore with the cooperation of the embassy of Iran. At the webinar, Mashallah Shakeri, Advisor to the Deputy Foreign Minister of Iran and former Ambassador to Pakistan, and Madoud Mohammad Zamani, Senior Expert from Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS), gave a wide view of bilateral cooperation between the two neighboring countries through video link. Other speakers at the webinar were Hasanin Reza Mirza, director of the Golden Ring Economic Research Institute, Defence Analyst Lieutenant General Sikander Afzal (retd), Aref Kamal, and Sanaullah former Pakistani ambassadors, and Qandil Abbas, Professor of international relations at Quaid-e-Azam University in Islamabad.

The participants in the meeting explained the important and key policies of the two countries, especially in the geopolitical scenario in the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, the developments of the subcontinent, and their impact on security and economic stability in the region.

The Iranian diplomats considered the development of cooperation between the private sectors of the two countries as a key factor in the expansion of Iran-Pakistan relations and said that linking the ports of Chabahar and Gwadar will pave the way for regional cooperation between the two neighboring countries.

They called for the use of the capacity of regional economic cooperation organizations, including ECO, and said that the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to join the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Pakistani experts stressed the importance of Iran’s joining CPEC project, saying that it would strengthen the long-term cooperation between Tehran and Beijing.

They praised Iran’s resilience to harsh US sanctions and stressed the importance of advancing energy projects in the region, including the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project with China, to avoid the US pressure and sanctions. The Pakistani speakers called for the establishment of a joint working group with the participation of the two countries’ private sectors to find ways of development.

The Iranian speakers also appreciated the recent remarks of the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan in support of the Palestinian people against the Zionist regime. The concept of the Golden Ring Economic Bloc was initiated in 2010 based on which GREF was established in 2015.

Cities on the coast from Karachi to Chabahar would give the GCC a run for their money.
No need to compete with GCC. Their economies are very different to ours. Our focus should be on low to middle end export oriented manufacturing. Getting cheap NG from Pars field to industry near Gwadar, combined with cheap labor (lower then ASEAN or India...even Bangladesh), Chinese (and possible Iranian) industrial know-how and a weak PKR should make exports very competitive globally. That should be our focus. Economic competitiveness not regional political rivalries.

I was referring to the money sinkhole that the GCC is for all the laundered money in the world lol. Everybody and their mother was investing in Dubai no questions asked. Pakistan can create large industrial zones along the coast of almost 900km. It is a shame that we aren't using even a fraction of it.

We should wish the GCC and all other Islamic countries as well as our allies good fortune. We should focus on our own economic competitiveness to uplift the less fortunate in our society. There is no zero sum here.

Pakistan can benefit immensely and earn huge export dollars by building large refineries in gwadar to refine iranian oil and re-export the finished product through gwadar. With Joe Biden slated to win the elections the US will most likely rejoin the Iran nuclear agreement.

Once these refineries are up and running, we can set up many dry ports in gwadar to store Iranian products and re-export them. Infact UAE earns huge dollars from doing the same (re-exporting Iranian goods as a way to circumvent sanctions). The dry port would also store and export goods from central asia/afghanistan.

We cant build gwadar into the next manufactering hub or IT hub overnight, but we can build it into a HUGE re-export/energy hub to serve the needs of Iran, Central Asia, China, and Pakistan (10+ countries, 2 billion population) and then eventually shift towards manufactering/IT from the huge income earned.

If Iran looks beyond sectarianism and support to terror groups who are anti-Pakistan then im all for economic cooperation that will benefit Pakistan.

I agree largely, but the US is staunchely opposed to CPEC and OBOR. Trump or Biden, it wouldn't make an iota difference. I think the Iranians wouldn't sit down with the Americans to go through the same shambolic nuclear deal that was thrown into the dustbin. Remember that this deal was annulled because of Israeli pressure. When the Democrats win the next elections they are still bound by Israeli pressure. Also, Iran won't trust the American word anymore. Iran has chosen to work with China and the region. Finally the Iranians understand that working with outsiders is a waste of time. Western nations don't adhere to their own deals. Working with regional countries is the way forward. Form a strong economic and trading bloc. Form a military alliance. Everything else is of secondary importance.

You're sentiments are very noble but why are reports emerging that it isn't India alone that is behind the terrorism in Balochistan and that the Gulf countries are also involved in the attempt to sabotage CPEC and Gwader?
Any country, Islamic, Arab or otherwise that wishes Pakistan ill and actively works against it's interests should be treated as an enemy.

I have heard this fringe notion that Gwadar is a threat to Dubai....That's complete nonsense. Dubai is the gateway to the UAE. Gwadar wont change that. RAW and NDS are the main backers of terrorism in Balochistan. Anything else is conspiracy theories.

I am all up for this but Pakistan should have its conditions and reservations met. Access to Turkey and abandoning support for terrorist groups that recruits Pakistanis should be included.

The US has no choice. Either they compete with China in Pakistan and provide us goodies or they stand to lose geopolitically. Having a degree of influence in Pakistan is better than 0 influence. Biden is prob the most pro-senator Pakistan ever had and now he is set to easily win the presidency. Both Kamala and Biden have been outspoken when it comes to kashmir.

Benefits that the US provides outweights no cooperation at all. Pakistan needs a non-aligned foreign policy. Even China doesnt have a foreign policy which puts all its eggs in one basket.

There is some truth to it. There's a large balochi population in the UAE. Connect the dots.
