What's new

Going ahead with Pak-Iran pipeline will trigger sanctions: US

A big negative point in this is price of Gas (other than sanctions) - which both governments has deferred for next. After 4 months both countries will be having new governments.

This is what I was trying to say right from the start! Signing a MOU is one thing & putting it into practice is altogether different. PPP knows this fact. If they come back to power.. they can always wriggle out of this situation by misleading the Nation in the pretext of pricing. If they fail... they can always blame the Govt at the time & thump their chest saying.. 'look we always had the intention to make this project work.. but current govt is dragging it's feet'.. subcontinental politics is so predictable.

pak should at least try a bit of diplomacy here.perhaps should try to explain that it needs energy and also that it didn't get the same treatment as india (the indo us nuclear deal ).

This has nothing to do with Pak diplomacy. The UAE, in their anti-Iran obsession, is also pushing Uncle Sam to be tough on this pipeline.

Even if the pipeline gets built, which is highly unlikely in the first place, it will not be functional due to US/UAE sponsored terrorism in Baluchistan.

This pipeline is Gwadar #2 -- a useless and inoperative political stunt.

$7.5 billion :woot: what if US/Israel attacks Iran in the near future, will the gas still keep on flowing?

you are the first pakistani national i have seen who calls this a political stunt.
IP pipeline,i agree,it will face a lot of difficulties.but what about gwadar port???

you really think us sponsored terrorists bla etc. can stop the gwadar port construction??

yea sure go on and put sanctions....as if we care....only the elite here is enjoying and those with dual nationalities.......

remember only one thing

there is only one way out of afghanistan and that is via port Qasim,Pakistan

@WebMaster the thing is even if the US offers Pakistan a better option (which they won't) this pipeline with Iran is the only option that can get energy flowing into Pakistan at the earliest date. Anything else would take a few more years and at this point Pakistan does not have a few more years because the energy situation if not adressed would probably lead to a crash of the economy anyway.

Gwadar is useless unless it is linked up to a transport network into central Asia and China.
The pipeline is useless if it can be sabotaged along the way.

I am for the pipeline and Gwadar, since I think they are both worth having. However, any infrastructure is only as good as its weakest link and, without addressing the 800lb gorilla in the room (Baluchistan issues), it is all just a political stunt.

Iran has, Pakistan has to. This is where the problem is. US is arm twisting Pakistan.

Its nothing but election stunt from Pakistan.
There will not be any sanctions, because there wont be any pipeline, till sanctions on Iran remain.

.
The timing of the pipeline can be claimed as a political stunt, however the pipeline is not by any means and which ever government comes next apart from PPP, will have no choice but to carry on as this project has the shortest time frame. Anything else will take 4-5 years more which Pakistan cannot afford. I will call the US sanctions more of a stunt then this pipeline. US is in no position to put sanctions on Pakistan........not anytime soon, not atleast till they are in Afghanistan.

Pakistan needs to break free from US & this is a perfect way to do it, this is one step forward. Pakistan needs to work closely with their neighbors who are Iran & China. India & Afghanistan they are NO FRIEND of Pakistan.

China is willing to help Pakistan in every filed & it’s like China said “It’s time to take Pakistan out of US Influence”. Pakistan should only work & stay with China & Iran. US will only cause problems for Pakistan & they will harm Pakistan every single day.

In that case even Chabahar wont be working much.

so dont be delusional.

US cant start anorther failed war

Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline: In snub to US, China offers $500m loan

IRAN / CHAHBAR:
The United States has made clear its strong stand against the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline – but the first world power will perhaps be further irritated to hear that China is backing it with a $500 million loan to Pakistan.
“In a major development, China has offered [the] loan,” an official at the Pakistan Embassy in Iran told The Express Tribune. The remaining $500 million would be generated through the Gas Infrastructure Development Cess from gas consumers.

Pakistan had earlier planned to generate the billion dollars through the tax and Iran will be putting in $500 million.

The geopolitical sands appear to be shifting on more than one front as this development comes days after Pakistan handed over to China control of its key Gwadar port in Balochistan.

In one of the boldest snubs of consistent US pressure and warnings, Islamabad and Tehran formally launched the project on Monday in an elaborate groundbreaking ceremony held at the Pakistan-Iran border.

Petroleum ministry officials confirmed that Pakistan is in the middle of procuring compressors and pipelines from a Chinese company and Iranian company Tadbir will do the construction. Pakistani companies such as Sui Northern Pipeline Limited, Sui Southern Gas Company Limited and Frontier Works Organisation would be involved.

The board of directors at the Interstate Gas Systems met March 8 to consider awarding the contract for the pipelines and compressors to Chinese company Panyn Chu King Steel Limited that will provide the pipeline at the rate of $1,650 per tonne, including compressors. The board will be negotiating for discounts with the Chinese firm.

Meanwhile, an Iranian company had quoted the price of $1,980 per tonne. An official said that Iranian contract prices would be turned down because they are higher.

The 1,600-kilometre pipeline, projected to cost a whopping $1.5 billion would enable the export of 21.5 million cubic meters of Iranian natural gas to Pakistan daily. The country hopes to overcome its energy crisis with the 4,000 Megawatts capacity of this project

You're presuming that US/Israel won't carry out their threats and what if they do with airstrikes or something and a war breaks outs. Both India and Pakistan would have invested a lot of money but sadly there won't be no pipeline and no Chabahar.

As a lay man even i dont see any enmity between Iran and Israel. Iranians are more working for shiaism viz a viz Lebonan and i dont see Iran is a threat in anyway to US or Israeli security. They have entire arab wolrd as their allies hence its more like that Iran is at greater risk of security threat from US-Israel-Arab world.
