God save the Syrian Army’

‘God save the Syrian Army’,
is a phrase from the documentary, Syrian Diary, which was screened at the Russian Consulate General last week, in which the only consul general who attended was the Iranian. The Westerners boycotted the function. The thinking man in Karachi who wants to know what is happening in the rest of the world usually does so by tuning in to one of the Western channels or Al Jazeera. And they are told that the Syrian Army is being quite beastly to the freedom fighters who are trying to liberate the country from a tyrannical leader. US President Barack Obama endorsed this view by saying the Syrian government should allow the ‘peaceful’ demonstration of the protestors. Now where have we heard this line before? Iraq, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya? The message is more or less the same and one gets the distinct impression that all these channels employ the services of the same news editor. Syrian Diary, in a sense, shows us the other side of the coin and chronicles the atrocities committed by the militants on the civilians, rather than the other way round.

The Russian consul general in Karachi, Andre Demidov, said in his welcome address that he didn’t necessarily want the audience to like the film, but just to watch it with an open mind. Perhaps, it was because the story line is littered with scenes of the most horrific violence, or perhaps, because people in this neck of the woods have been so brainwashed with Western propaganda that they would be suspicious of any approach that didn’t toe the official line. The film, which is more like a series of news reports rather than a documentary, took seven months to complete and was produced a couple of months ago by an attractive Russian lady journalist named Anastassia Popova. It is dedicated to the Syrian soldier and all the civilians who have died at the hands of the terrorists. It consists of a series of interviews interspersed with scenes of executions and decapitation of civilian prisoners by the militants — all cobbled together to form a gripping commentary on the secret war taking place inside Syria.

Documentaries produced in the West are often shot in the safe past tense, clinical and detached, ending with the usual clichés about free speech and freedom, which apparently is only possible under a Western-style democracy. Syrian Diary takes place in the present tense and has a freshly minted terror. It is, in many ways, a sad, sad film — a movie that shows the savage nature of mercenaries who call themselves liberators and make the TTP look like boy scouts. Sure, our local militants attack military and police targets and blow themselves up in crowded places, but they don’t go around raping six-year old girls and ripping open pregnant mothers and using the baby as a football as some of the freedom fighters in Syria have been accused of doing.

In Syrian Diary, there is no sermonising, no moralising and no calls for help. It tells the story of a people who love their soldiers. Cynics might dismiss the chronicle as a bit of emotional prurience and mawkish sentiment — a bravura exhibition of quivering lachrymosity — an amateurish attempt to cover up the excesses committed by the Syrian Army. But the scenes are too authentic, too real and too stark to have been fabricated in some studio in Moscow. It should be screened on one of the Pakistani television channels so that the public can get a glimpse of what the average Syrian thinks about what is really happening in the country.

Bashar al-Assad should leave Syria and let elections happen there...

I don't support Syrian Army nor Syrian rebels, because both have done atrocities against mankind.

Shouldn't the Wahabi mercenaries leave first and allow calm to prevail so that orderly elections may be held?

Alasad have been calling for elections under the UN monitoring for over a year.... however the west and other refuse, because they know Alasad will win... if they claim that Alasad is not popular, then why doesn't the west support democracy and elections?

Tell all those you can that in Pakistan we are beginning to know what is going on, because the Wahabi have the same thing in mind for us - Whatever else you and other may or may not do, don't forget, don't ever forget who did this to Syria and soon to Pakistan as well.

I am Sunni, but I am ashamed that in the same of the Sunnat, such horrendous acts are being committed - and no, Pakistan is not a wahabi colony, not yet, and as long as we have breath, it won't be - and of course you don't have to like or approave of anything I say or write -

and Syria becomes another Iraq, another Libya.

Because after Syria, who? Pakistan? Will then some claim that the Pak fauj has killed people that have actually been killed by the Wahabi terrorists?

Just imagine that that at the dawn of the 22nd century, Muslims should be killed by terrorists funded by the West and Saudi Princes and the Qatari - both the Saudi and atari are Wahabi, the terrorists themselves are Wahabi -- And whatis the crime of the Muslims and non-Muslims being killed? That they are not Wahabi, that Iran is their ally - How Much blood of Muslims will the thrones of the Wahabi princes sit on?

Now these Princes are desperate, they seek to avoid the demand for dignity heard everywhere in the Arabic speaking world, these princes hope that by creating bloodshed, they can crush the voices seeking dignity and peace.

Your racism is shown... plus you don't know anything about Syria... sectarians issues didn't exist until western/gcc democracy came...

and about those children you are talking about... they were killed by your beloved terrorists and then videoed them to gain international sympathy... every massacre in Syria happens on the eve of UN Council meeting... I can show you videos of the so called "freedom and Democracy" fighters beheading people...
also if you watch the Syrian Diary, you will see what FSA have done... they play football with a dead baby...

Syrians know the truth and know that we are fighting terrorism... if Syrians didn't know what the real game was, Syria would have been fallen to hands of the west and their puppets in GCC... but Syria is still standing and fighting the international terrorism supported by the west and their puppets

I saw this documentary last week - it really shows the other side like the article says - one thing that really shocked me was how these fighters are funded by the sheiks - the mercenaries are very brutal and i was wondering why the western media never says any bad thing about the "rebels" and never shows "the other side of the coin" - i watch all kinds of docs with an open mind only - i am more confused about the syrian situation now after watched this documentary .

The source of all these Wahhabist scums are wealthy Saudi, UAE and Qatar tycoons. Of course, since they supply oil to the West and are buddies with them, they get a free pass.

Whether you are a Sunni or Shia , You are propagating things against Pakistan Army and its civilians . You are continously trying somehow distract attentions frm situation in Syria by bringing Pakistan in it and the fact is that you extremely ignoring the sunni killing that is also happening in Pakistan by Shia terrorist organistions , and Its Shia activists who trying to blame ISI and Pakistan army to hide their criminal deeds. People like you are such waste that our nation has produced. You are always criticizing irrationally on Sunni population of Pakistan without taking the other side of coin in account , Just stop your absurd behaviour or abondon your nationality over Pakistan for watever you are trying to attempting , We are Quiet for the sake of nation and don't bringing the all discrimination in front of world that is happening against us .

Sure, kind of like how China does in Africa. Supports genocidal dictators as long as the oil and copper is flowing. Dont throw stones from your (badly constructed) glass house.

before anyone makes a comment, they should watch the documentary The Syrian Diary in post # 4
