The presence of 80,000 football lovers just to have a glimpse of their football hero amazed Maradona, who expressed his gratitude in Spanish, “I have never imagined that football is followed so passionately here and I have so many fans.”.

Kolkata: Overwhelmed by the response of the fans here, Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona says he might consider helping Indian football by becoming its brand ambassador.

“In terms of football, there are so many things to do here in India. I hope this can take India to the next level with good infrastructure and commitment. I am willing to help India by becoming a brand ambassador,” Maradona said through his PR firm head Sebastian de Monte.

Touched by the rapturous reception, Maradona said the trip to India had given him some of the best moments of his life.
Complete success

“The India tour is a complete success. It was full of complete joy, complete happiness. Really excellent! The trip is fulfilling and I hope to come here again with my family,” he said.

Over one lakh people turned up to catch a glimpse of the enigmatic star at the Salt Lake Stadium and he was mobbed wherever he went during his 48-hour trip.

Asked whether the Argentine was hesitant to come to India after the terror strikes in Mumbai, de Monte said: “There were some concerns, at first.

"But after seeing the arrangements, we were very satisfied.”

Earlier, he donated Rs. 12.36 lakh — the proceeds of Diego Maradona’s auctioned memorabilia for the Maheshtala-located Indian Football School, the foundation stone of which was laid by the legendary Argentine himself on his arrival last week.
Overwhelming response

The bid dinner which followed, open exclusively to partners of Maradona’s India trip, fetched an overwhelming response, with his four jerseys — three Argentine, one Boca Juniors and another Barcelona — alone fetching Rs. 6.91 lakh.

With mediapersons and his die-hard fans giving their sleep a miss and preferring to wait outside the hotel on Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, Maradona and his entourage left around 1.30 a.m. to catch his flight to Frankfurt.

The list of items which went under the hammer included three Mardona photographs with official emblem, which fetched Rs. 3.30 lakh, with one of the three photos being auctioned for Rs. 2 lakh.

Frenzied fans welcome Maradona to Kolkata

KOLKATA (Reuters) – Thousands of excited fans lined the road to give Diego Maradona an emotional welcome to Kolkata on Saturday.

"I thought there were no more surprises left in life but my visit to Kolkata has changed that," Maradona told a news conference after arriving in the city, India's soccer hub, for a two-day visit.

"I didn't know people loved soccer so much in this part of the world," added Maradona through an interpreter, after organisers took his footprint for a soccer archive.

Maradona inaugurated a private soccer academy on the outskirts of Kolkata after being flown there by helicopter due to tight security following last week's Mumbai attacks which killed more than 170 people.

A crowd of around 100,000 was expected at an exhibition game in Maradona's honour at Kolkata's main stadium later on Saturday, to which leading Indian players past and present were invited.

Maradona, who led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup triumph and took charge as national coach last month, told the news conference he was confident his team would shine in the 2010 finals in South Africa.

"We have a great team which has all the quality to be successful in the next World Cup. Argentina can be one of the best four teams," he said.

On Sunday, Maradona will visit the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity to pay homage to their founder, Nobel laureate Mother Teresa, who died in 1997.

I was in Kolkata a couple of days before Maradona was to descend on the city.

Already the build up was visible for everybody to see, huge hoardings and everybody had only one topic to discuss.

What better place to come then football crazy Calcutta.

Hey, there is one more very interesting thing about the whole thing...This guy is famous for his "left" foot. This guy after becoming famous became a popular face for the communists. He has been a vocal critic of Bush and of American policies. He made a public Anti-Bush pledge..
Check this out...Maradona makes anti-Bush pledge to Castro - Times Online

This has seen him rubbing shoulders with Ahmedinajad as well..

No wonder communist stronghold of west Bengal was his destination in India. And he made it a point to meet the veteran marxist leader and ex-Cm of West Bengal, Jyoti Basu.
