PESHAWAR: The government of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has approved the construction of 356 micro hydel stations with a power generation capacity of 35 megawatts (MW) with the help of non-government organisations (NGOs) in various parts of the province.

Work on various ongoing energy projects of oil, gas, thermal and hydel has begun through the utilisation of provincial-based natural resources, in a bid to make K-P a energy hub.

Various committees have been constituted for energy expertise to remove hurdles blocking various on-going energy projects in the province.

These decisions were taken by the Board of Directors for Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization (PEDO) during its second meeting which was held under the chairmanship of Tariq Iqbal Khan.

During the meeting, the organisation’s secretary gave a detailed presentation to the board members regarding the work pace and problems faced during the implementation of the projects.

He added that in keeping with the vision of change of the current provincial government, it has been decided to construct 356 community-based micro hydel stations through NGOs with the total cost of Rs4.7 billion from Hydel Development Funds (HDF).

These mini stations will be constructed in Abbottabad, Mansehra, Batagram, Tor Ghar, Kohistan, Malakand, Buner, Swat, Shangla, Dir (Upper/Lower) and Chitral having total capacity of 35MW and so far six local NGOs have shown interest to develop these projects.

The board has given approval to start work on the large capacity of hydropower projects in the province although seven projects will be advertised in order to develop these in the private sector.

Khan said that K-P is blessed with abundant natural resources for oil and gas, thermal and hydel generation which should be utilised for curbing the current energy crisis in the country.

He further stressed to boost the work pace on the ongoing energy projects and planned to complete them within the stipulated time period.

@Jazzbot - Bhai 356 of them only producing 35 MW ? o_O

Isn't that a bit too low ? They should've selected ones which at least produce 1 MW of energy per dam so that nearby villages could be powered up !

35 MW from 356 hydel stations is like 100kw or 0.1mw from each station. The net cost of each project in average is only 1 crore 33 lakh rupees. That is not good enough for building homes these days.

So you get the idea how small these projects are. If you build small dams or hydel power projects that start picking up the attention, it costs at least 500 to 1000 crore rupees to make it a news. That is due to high costs of such projects. I am not sure if these tiny hydel power stations for name sake would be beneficial. But if it is then as I keep saying "Something is better than nothing"

These are off grid pico/micro hydel projects that are meant for individual villages.

@Jazzbot if I am not mistaking KP government can earn carbon points from these projects.

How many homes can 35mw power? If a .1mw provides non stop bijli enough for lights and fans, i think it's good enough? But cost should be checked... Like what if for same amount you can have 50mw or 100mw power project.

Each pico hydel plant will power 1 village community. So we are talking about 356 villages getting electrified.

Does anyone has total number of villages in KPK?

but is that .10mw enough? enough to power irrigation, fan, lighting etc?

We need to understand the dynamics and geography of KPK, these are very far fetched areas we're talking about in mountainous areas. This is the most feasible option to provide electricity to these areas not only for residential use but for irrigation and agriculture in those small villages.

Besides, the cost of these projects is to be fulfilled via NGOs so they aren't gonna hurt KP govt. These projects are already proving to be big success in gilgit baltistan areas as @Bilal. has explained.

These projects aren't for curbing load shedding, these are for improvement of those small villages. For load shedding, there are other projects with more capacity: KPK Government plans to launch 17 energy projects (I shared this yesterday).
