The police recovered the body of Ahmed Miraz, 50, younger brother of composer and freedom fighter Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul, from near Kuril flyover in the capital’s Khilkhet early Sunday.
A forensic lecturer of Dhaka Medical College said Miraz was strangled and
that they had taken viscera samples to determine if poisonous stuff was poured into his mouth.
His family said they suspected he was killed in connection with his brother Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul’s testifying against Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ghulam Azam at the International Crimes Tribunal-1.
Bulbul urged the government to ensure his security after the murder of his brother. He said that he had received death threat several times over the past few months.
Some pedestrians saw the body by the railway near the Khilkhet-Kuril flyover and called the police at about 1:15am, said Khilkhet police officer-in-charge Shamim Hossain.
The police said they had identified Miraz after receiving a call on his mobile phone by Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul and his sister.
His family members came to the spot and identified him. The body was taken to the Khilkhet police station at about 4:00am and then to his brother Bulbul’s house at Moghbazar before being sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
Sohel Mahmood, forensic department lecturer at Dhaka Medical College, told reporters that Miraz might have been drugged before being strangled.
The primary report said there were marks of slight injuries in the back of his head, blood clots in his mouth and the bridge of his nose was broken.
His nephew Manzurul Azim said Miraz had lived in his sister Rokhsana Parvin’s apartment at Eastern Housing at Pallabi.
He went out of the house at about 10:00am on Saturday. Having failed to contact him over mobile, Rokshana informed Bulbul about it.
As they were trying to contact Miraz over mobile, a police officer received the call at about 1:30am and informed them of his death.
Lutful Kabir, deputy commissioner of DMP’s Gulshan division, said they were cross-checking all possible motives and waiting for the post-mortem report to find out the causes of the death.
He also said the area where the body was found was a desolate place and they were investigating how he had gone there. The Detective Branch of police was also investigating the matter.
Rokhsana Parvin said that while going out Miraz had told her that he was going to watch a movie at Star Cineplex.
Last Friday, he visited his mother’s grave at Azimpur graveyard and he often told us to bury him in his mother’s grave, she said.
His namaj-e-janaza was held at Chhapra mosque at Azimpur and buried in his mother’s grave at Azimpur graveyard Sunday afternoon.
Ahmed Miraz, a bachelor, used to buy and sell cars and was planning to start a mobile shop.
He ran a clearing and forwarding (C&F) agency at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and was also involved with a buying agency, said his nephew.
Miraz, son of Wafiz Uddin, came from Atiya of Patwari Bazar of Begumganj in Noakhali district.
Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul told reporters at his flat at Moghbazar that he had been passing days in fear for the last seven months like a person under house arrest.
Bulbul, a freedom fighter, had testified against former Jamaat-e-Islami chief Ghulam Azam on October 5 last year as the 14th prosecution witness at the International Crimes Tribunal -1.
On Friday, the body of Tanvir Mohammad Twaki, 17, son of Narayanganj Ganajagaran Mancha convener Rafiur Rabbi, was found in Shitalakkhya River, two days after he had gone missing.
Family suspects that Twaki was killed by Jamaat-Shibir men.
Wahidul Alam Junu, who had testified on February 12 as the 19th witness against war crimes suspect Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, also mysteriously died in February.
