Even as 'Ghar Wapsi', the Hindu right's agenda to get back Christians and Muslims into the fold of their 'original religion, gains momentum, it seems the Hindu groups have not restricted this 'programme' to just Hinduism and have extended it to Sikhism too.

According to an Indian Express report, RSS and other affiliated groups in Punjab, claimed to have converted over 8,000 Christians back to 'Sikhism' in the "last three years, some 3,500 of them over the last one year."

"Hoshiarpur district has seen the most ‘ghar wapsis’, followed by Amritsar and Batala", adds the IE report.

The report points out that RSS has also found support from "gurdwaras and some members of the SAD-dominated Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC)." RSS leader Ram Gopa,l who heads the organisation’s Dharm Jagran unit, justified their programme and claimed that in some villages "the entire population had converted" to Christianity and that this was a threat to Sikhism.

One SGPC member Kiranjot Kaur, who has helped with these re-conversions agreed with Gopal's views and pointed out that Christianity was a serious threat to Sikhism.

It seems RSS has also made sure that lower castes, who re-convert to Hinduism, are not discriminated against and thus lured by Christianity all over again. Leaders of the outfit in the state claimed that they are training some lower castes to become priests, a privilege reserved for Brahmins.

One widow, Kinder Kaur, who reconverted told the paper, “We converted (to Christianity) because we were told that my husband would be cured of his illness. He died in 2011. Three months ago, the RSS motivated us to become Sikhs again. I have also changed the names of my children from Thomas and Rebecca to Sumeet and Kuljit.”

But this re-conversion tactic has not gone down well with Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), which is an ally of the BJP, points out the report, as the party "sees Dalit Christians as a vote bank." The report points out that even Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal assured Christians that they would not allow “forcible conversions” in the city.

It should be noted that where RSS is concerned, its tendency to put Sikhism within the fold of Hinduism has meant that it is not viewed with great liking by 'orthodox Sikhs.' Of course where conversion is concerned, Punjab is not the only state where RSS and it's fringe-groups have claimed success.

Most recently reports showed that VHP had converted over 200 Christians in Gujarat in a mass ceremony. A PTI report showed that the rituals were held at Aranai village in Valsad district of BJP-ruled Gujarat and that a 'Maha Yagnya' (ritual of the sacred fire) was organised for "purification" of the tribals before taking them back in Hindu-fold. Each of them was also given a copy of Bhagwad Gita.

VHP insisted that the re-conversion was "voluntary" and not by force. "As part of the ongoing 'Ghar Vapsi' programme, VHP today re-converted 225 people from Christian community and took them back into Hindu religion," said Valsad district VHP chief Natu Patel.

Ghar wapsi in Punjab? RSS converts Christians to Sikhism, raises Akali ire - Firstpost

doob maro SGPC walo ...........tuhada kam RSS wale kar rahe hun:hitwall::hitwall:

With the RSS and its affiliates having extended their ‘ghar wapsi’ programs to get Christians back to Sikhism in Punjab, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) — the apex representative body of Sikhs — has begun a concerted effort to get Sikhs, predominantly Mazhabi Sikhs, back to the fold. As part of the initiative, the SGPC, controlled by the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), recruited 27 new preachers Tuesday.

The 27 qualified recruits, with either an MA in religion or having undergone the three-year course in missionary colleges run by the SGPC, will join a team of more than 150 preachers already working in different parts of the state. The SGPC runs as many as nine missionary colleges, six of which are in Punjab. It runs three-year courses in these colleges focussing on Gurbani, Gurmat and Sikh principles.

SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar, who was in Amritsar Tuesday, confirmed the recruitment of the preachers. He added that more preachers were likely to be recruited and added that they would focus on the border belt to spread awareness about Sikhism. Makkar, however, asserted that the SGPC was against “forced conversions”.

Over the last few days, the SGPC has also started the Sikhi Saroop Mera Asli Roop (My real identity is being Sikh) initiative, where preachers are reaching out to schools and colleges with a form that contains an undertaking that one would return to Sikhism and follow Sikh tenets and principles. For students who fill and sign the form, an SGPC preacher hands over a medal as a token of appreciation.

SGPC Dharam Parchar Committee secretary Satbir Singh said by the end of January, nearly 10,000 students would be covered under the initiative. “This is all voluntary. The students sign the form voluntarily after they are convinced that they should return to follow Sikh principles. There have been cases where Sikh students get their hair shorn. The initiative is aimed at getting them back into the Sikhism fold,” Satbir Singh told The Indian Express.

Majha (Punjab) - A tale of Changing Faiths | SikhNet

why punjabis changing faith in majha area

Some people urgently need better ways to spend their time.... or a visit to the psychiatrist.

If UP byelections was peoples rejection of love jihad politics of bjp then recent electoral victories of bjp are reflection of peoples support for Ghar Wapsi initiatives. Suck that Sickulars.

 And someone here was saying that RSS is a threat to sister faiths as well.

Missionaries have been given too much concession. Time to change it all.

Good going.

For Pakistani friends here: Conversion here isn't like one guy holding others at gunpoint while there are 'evidences' of others seeing you as a convert. Most of these reversions are happening because many poor who were told that they will be given goodies for converting to Xtianity, did not get what they were promised. So they approach RSS, Arya Samaj and anyone else who can at least get them back.

I hope RSS also helps many of our fellow brethren here in NE return to Buddhism as their ancestors were.

Shamrock faiths should be tried to preserved as much (Sikhism,Hinduism,Buddhism etc) but if a individual really wants to chafe his religion he should be allowed to do that & also this evganelist Missionary mess needs to be solved ASAP fortunately new govt is slowly cutting off ways for their Funding

Indeed Religion is a serious business in this part of the world & should not be messed with

I think this should assuage those who wondered (wrongly) if RSS would target Sikhs or what it would do in Punjab.

The answer is clear.

Organized religion was always a business. It was never meant to deliver spiritual peace like our cultures of subcontinent, but only as an instrument to control resources and power.

Correct also the Govt should cooperate with moderate churches & mosques to counter the problem of extremist taking control of These religions
