Germany has received into service its sixth Airbus Defence and Space A400M transport aircraft, and the first to be equipped for tactical operations.

The delivery, which was announced by the manufacturer on 12 December, adds to the baseline global logistical capabilities of the five aircraft so far delivered with the ability to perform cargo and paratroop air drops, low level flying, tanking, as well as flights into austere and contested environments.

With this delivery, the first five aircraft will now be retrofitted to this tactical standard, which includes being fitted with the Elbit Systems' J-MUSIC defensive-aids system. Germany is set to receive 53 A400M aircraft to replace the ageing Transall C-160s, though this number may yet be reduced to 40 for budgetary reasons.

The Luftwaffe received its first aircraft in December 2014 and it conducted its first international mission in April 2015. However, the introduction of the A400M into German service has recently been marred by problems that have included delayed deliveries and heavy engine wear that have resulted in calls from the country's government for compensation. Despite these issues, the A400M will when fully fielded significantly boost Germany's capability to provide strategic mobility to air, land, and sea assets.

The Luftwaffe's A400Ms are flown out of Wunstorf Air Base by Air Transport Wing 62.
