Germany, France eye use of bases in Turkey
Uğur Ergan – ANKARA

Berlin and Paris have notified Ankara of their desire to use Turkish bases to consolidate the battle against jihadists in Syria

Paris on Nov. 13.

In the aftermath of the attacks, in which 130 people were killed by ISIL militants, France promised to increase its support for the U.S.-led coalition against ISIL, while Germany promised its neighbor that it would make a greater contribution to the fight.

In line with these pledges, France and Germany have applied to use Turkey’s İncirlik Air Base, something that Turkey’s Foreign Ministry and General Staff are warm to.

Berlin sent a letter of intent to the Turkish side regarding the usage of the air base for the Tornado reconnaissance jets it has pledged to send to the coalition.

The Turkish General Staff and the Foreign Ministry were reportedly leaning toward the usage of the air base by German jets. Ankara is expected to send a positive response to Germany soon after the completion of necessary evaluations.

Turkey agreed in July to open the air base to U.S. drones and fighter jets as part of an agreement for the two countries to work more closely together against ISIL.

German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen said one day after German ChancellorAngela Merkel and French President Françoise Hollande met to discuss the ways in which they could increase their fight against ISIL that Germany could send Tornado reconnaissance jets, a frigate and a tanker aircraft for refueling purposes.

A couple of days later, German Army Chief of Staff Volker Wieker told Germany’s Bild am Sonntag that Germany was holding talks with Turkey and Jordan over the deployment of the four to six Tornado jets, adding that a total of around 1,200 German personnel would be deployed.

France asks for usage of all air bases
In a similar move, France also sent a letter of intent to Ankara for the usage of air bases in Turkey, including İncirlik, as well as Turkish airspace in the event of emergency.

France also demanded that the French aircraft carrier Charles De Gaulle receive logistical support from the Taşucu Port in the southern province of Mersin, which neighbors Adana.

Turkey reportedly does not see any obstacles to France’s demands, sources have said, adding that the deal sealed with the U.S. on the usage of İncirlik could be extended to other partners as well.

Sources have also said Spain could extend the duty of the Patriot missiles it has stationed in Adana for another year, while Italy could station SAMP-T missiles by early 2016 to the southeastern provinces of Kahramanmaraş and Gaziantep.

Germany pulled its Patriot missiles from Turkey earlier in 2015, two years after it deployed them.

Meanwhile, the German cabinet approved a mandate for military assistance to back the international fight against ISIL in Syria on Dec. 1.

The package, which still requires parliamentary approval, covers Tornado reconnaissance jets, a naval frigate and up to 1,200 troops in response to a French appeal.

The engagement steps up German involvement in the campaign against ISIL for the first time to a more direct role.

Merkel noted that the German engagement began in September 2014 with the start of a program to train and arm Peshmerga forces from the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) in Iraq fighting ISIL.

“We are expanding this participation in the existing alliance with a fight against the same [ISIL] but now in Syria,” Merkel, who pledged Paris “any and all assistance” after the Nov. 13 jihadist attacks, told reporters.

The mandate is for one year at a cost of 134 million euros ($142 million) and can be extended until 2016.

Parliament will also be asked to approve provisions for emergency medical assistance for France in the case of “catastrophic events,” and a still-to-be-determined amount of additional humanitarian aid for refugees and displaced people in Syria, Iraq and neighboring countries.

Good to see NATO countries cooperating together as expected. @FrenchPilot ,@Taygibay ,@Bundeswehr et al.
Seems only Britain is wasting precious time wrangling over useless political debates/partisan politics in parliament meanwhile all European Powers, U.S and international community are united in their desire to strike ISIS and other terror groups in Syria. :disagree:

It means the French and Germany fighters will fly from Turkey airbase into Syria airspace, isn't it ? Well ... the Russian deployed S-400 systems in Syria close to Syria-Turkey border, so watch out WWIII incoming ! :chilli: This game will be more interesting.

Well, the UK is constrained by its laws and as an alien, I'll keep it down on that.

On the main subject, for those interested, this is classic geo-politics with every
move computed for its effect :

NATO was very quiet on answering Ankara's call for help after the Russian Su-24 went down.
But as the intent was there to be more offensive since the Nov. 13th attacks in Paris, by waiting
a few days and presenting the various deployments to Turkey as an anti_Daesh necessity …
NATO aircrafts are still being brought forth exactly how they would have under official response!

This will then encircle Russian air presence, encompass, encapsulate it, the VVS having but a base and a half.
The idea is more or less to limit their spread, making a wide Kurdistan possibly delineable … as an OTH example?

There is a reason to do so now rather than later because the ground ally of Assad, Iran, will be re-equiped soon
as far as an air power with
eventually expeditionary possibilities. It's not the case as 2015 ends, let's not waste the opportunity?

All lies and jests and all that, good evening all, Tay.

They would probably come to some sort of understanding. WW3 won't be a joke. Stop being such a tool please.

It's not a video game.
BTW,our forces are coordinating the operations with the Russians,so to avoid an incident,i guess.
Our aircrafts launched from the Charles de Gaulle have no problems with the Russian air defence systems, and continue their missions.

@Taygibay

Mais le CEMA, le général Pierre de Villiers, et son homologue russe, le général Valeri Guerassimov, ont récemment discuté de la "coordination" des opérations militaires en Syrie. No sweat, donc.

Classic case of French FP autonomy allowing diplomatic functionality with Moscow but not the same
once you see it as I did as a gang response by "West". We take part in both thanks to our restrictive practices
in use of strength that had us bomb for the Iraqi govt in one case and away from Assad's troops in the second.

This is top diplomacy at work that more hung-ho Air Forces, one comes to mind in context, would not permit.
Just remember : two different contextual playing fields for us on that one geographical one, with NATO or by ourselves.

Read you later, Tay.

Our Objectives for our pilots only Recon missions no strike missions. Even Berlin is wanting to ally with Bashar Assad. So in my opinion i don't see Russia bothering us in Syria.

Don't be ridiculous, the S-400's was just escalation to hinder Turkish Air Force Infiltration across the International Border, but not enough to shoot down a Turkish Jet. An escalation that will benefit NATO in their Electronic Intelligence on the system.

Each power has their supporter, but no-one is going to be shooting down each-other's jets over Syrian Airspace. Hell, even the Israelis cross over without intervention.

The Turks have controlled their airstrikes close to the border.
The US is all over the place.
The Jordanians/ UAE/ Saudis have held on close to the Syrian-Jordanian/ Iraqi-Saudi border.
The Russians/ Syrians are in support of Syrian Army.
The French and Brits will piggy-back on the US intelligence.

Who did I miss?

As long as each power is routinely bombing something ISIS they can continue to bomb FSA/ Nursi/ Syrian Army/Kurdish etc. they can airdrop supplies for the FSA, CAS for the Syrian Army/ Kurdish forces.

Are France and Germany prepared to get stabbed in the back?

Ahahahahah .....I like this depiction. Fits perfectly well with this complex conflict. :)
