Germany delivers Marder AIFVs to Jordan
15th December 2016 - 15:00 by Nicholas Fiorenza in Brussels
Germany is delivering 50 Marder armoured infantry fighting vehicles (AIFVs) to Jordan to help secure its borders with Syria and Iraq.
During the handover of the first 16 Marders to Jordan's King Hussein Brigade on 11 December, German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen said the AIFV ‘is up to the task’ of helping monitor and strengthen Jordan's 380km border with Syria and 180km border with Iraq against infiltration by non-state actors.
‘It protects the crew, it enables observation and it has proved its worth for decades,’ von der Leyen said.
Germany will also supply the Jordanian army with 70 all-terrain trucks and 56 mini buses to handle first aid, registration and transport of refugees.
The deliveries are part of Germany's 2015 enable and enhance initiative to support Jordan's security sector. The initiative has a budget of 100 million euros this year, rising to 130 million euros in 2017, and complements humanitarian assistance and development cooperation measures.
Jordan has an eclectic range of equipment in its armed forces, particularly in its army, with a variety of platforms imported from the West but also featuring Soviet Era systems.
The Marder vehicle has been in service with the German Bundeswehr for decades and is slowly being replaced by the Puma, although it is still considered to be a capable system.
