The federal interior minister of Germany, Thomas de Maizière, suggested Monday that parts of Germany with substantial Muslim populations could have public holidays during Muslim festivals.

“I’m prepared to talk about whether we would also introduce Muslim public holidays,” de Maizière said.

He drew attention to the fact that there are several Catholic holidays, such as All Saints day, which are only celebrated in Catholic-dominated parts of the country.

Turkey says liberal German mosque ‘incompatible’ with Islam

“Why shouldn’t we think about a Muslim public holiday in parts of the country where many Muslims live?” he questioned.

However, the Christian Democratic (CDU) politician maintained that public holidays in Germany are influenced by Christianity and that it should generally stay this way.

Currently, nine public holidays are observed in the entire country. However, the southern state of Bavaria has a total of 13 days off, as it celebrates a few additional Catholic holidays.

The interior minister made the suggestion while speaking at a campaign event for upcoming state elections in Lower Saxony. There the CDU are polling in close competition with the Social Democrats to be the largest party in the state parliament.

CDU leader in Lower Saxony, Bernd Althusmann, seemed unamused by de Maizière’s timing.

“Public holidays have a long tradition in Germany, I don’t see any need for a change to the current system. I don’t think a discussion about religious holidays during election campaigning is appropriate,” he said.

Meanwhile, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) responded angrily to the interior minister’s suggestion.

Party deputy leader Beatrix von Storch tweeted, “The CDU wants Muslim holidays – that is the difference to the AfD. We say NO NO NO to that!”

But the Social Democrats seemed more accepting. Sawsan Chebli, a Berlin politician for the SPD, said “I find the idea good. In Berlin there are already regulations for Ramadan and Eid.”

Seems like it will be the begining of the right wingers in Germany. Just politics and nothing else. Muslim holidays will be used to malign muslims more and will increase extremism. Msslims should come and cancel the request on behalf of all german muslims. A good muslim can offer and celebrate his religious days while working.

.
Well, that means more public holidays for Germans too. Can't see any loss in this deal!

No it is not. The far right AfD already reached 3rd strongest position. Merkels CDU virtually collapsed. The SPD felt out of government. What we see is the rise of the far right.

A leading muslim in Germany (Kaddor) said this is a poisoned advice. It will create even more tension and give the AfD far more votes.

The rise of the far right was a short bushfire that is already over... after the federal election was the election in Niedersachsen...

AfD reached there only 6.2% after 13% at the federal election

1. at the federal election over 50% of the AfD voters were only protest voters who want a change in the migration politic... this request has now reached even the most die hard left winger calling for open boarders... the chief of the Linke (ultra left) said they should face the fact what the citizen of Germany wants and look for a controlled imigration politic were the number is capped and the who is allowed to stay is regulated (funny sidenote... Turkish/Germans living since decades in Germany also vote for a regulation)

2. The AfD is falling appart... after the federal ellection all moderat leading politicans left the Party because of the ultra right winger and the bad taste of NAZI speek inside the Party... The AfD is like the Piraten Party only a oneday fly that will kill itself and dissapear...

3. For most voters the AfD has already reached what they wanted... that the established partys took the population more serious and listen more carefully what the pople on the street wants.... that already happend so there is no reason for protest voters to vote again for the AfD

The AfD will most likely stay for some time at the 5% mark till they murder themself..

The moderat leader of the AfD which have left the Party after the federal election already founded a new party die Blauen (the blue) they want to be ellectable conservatives which could do in the long run real politic without the bad tast of ultra right winger and Nazi speeking like we see in the AfD today...

What could happen...the CDU stays in center and will loose its right wing to the Die Blauen, if the die Blauen could establish themself most moderate AfD politicans and voters will change to Die Blauen.... which left the remaining AfD as what it is a pot of yesterday Nazis and they will never get 5% to get in some sort of federal or state parliament

just my thought
