German firm to build 50 MW solar power station

Updated at: 2031 PST, Monday, July 05, 2010
German firm to build 50 MW solar power station KARACHI: A German firm Azur Solar will build a 50 MW solar power station at Dhabeji in District Thatta.

The project will be completed by the next year with a cost of 200 million Euro.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting chaired by the Adviser to the Sindh Chief Minister on Investment, Zubair Motiwala, with the officials of the Azur Solar here on Monday at the office of the Sindh Board of Investment statement.

The German firm had already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Sindh in this respect.

It was stated that the German government and the firm Azur Solar will initially set up a 60 KV solar power station to provide free electricity to backward 'goths' of Badin and to schools and basic health centres.

Before the meeting, the German delegation inspected the site of 50 MW solar power station at Dhabeji.

It was informed that the German firm will complete the pilot project in the next few months.

I am writing something on solar energy, will post within next few days when i get sometime and finish writing my article. Just want to say if the german company had planned to invest same money in wind power plants, i can assure you they could have rather generated 100mw+ of electricity

For example take an example of this project

http://www.renewableenergyworld.com...oma-wind-farm-gains-regulatory-approval-44808

It costed 200 million dollars and generating 120 megawatt of electricity. Wind power plants require less space than comparing to solar power plants and generate electricity in both day and night unlike solar that only generate electricity under the sunlight (or use natural gas to run turbines at nights)

I understand total cost vary in each and every project but we all know Sindh alone has potential to generate 50,000mw of electricity from wind and it is very feasible to invest in that province if they want to invest in clean energy only.

Frankly speaking i am up for Hydro, coal and Nuclear energy before anything else. These are only peanuts and makes a difference only when total electricity from small projects like this is accumulated in one sheet

Azur Solar GmbH, a well reputed German solar company, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Raza Impex Pvt Ltd Pakistan during the visit of the Prime Minister of Pakistan Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani to Germany. The signing ceremony was attended by the officials of German Ministry of Economics and officials of Pakistan Board of Investment (BOI).

The two companies have agreed to enter into a joint venture for installation of a 50 mega watt solar power plant in Pakistan. Mr. Bernd Sauter, CEO, signed the MOU on behalf of Azur Solar whereas Mr. Zafar Hussain, CEO, and Mr. Khurram Bilal, Managing Finance Partner signed it on behalf of Raza Impex Pakistan. The signing was witnessed by the Board of Investment of Pakistan.

Board of Investment (BOI) Chairman, Mr. Saleem H. Mandviwalla, and Honorary Investment Counsellor of BOI in Germany, Mr. Sikander Mir-Kohler, have played a very active and effective role in bringing the private sectors of the two countries closer together in an unusual way.Furthermore Mr. Mir-Kohler is determined to offer one window facilitation services for an early and solid realisation of the project.

The signing of this MOU will bring German technology and know-how to Pakistan in the area of alternative energy. Presently Pakistan is facing acute shortage of electricity and the Democratic Government of Pakistan encourages renewable energy to bridge the short fall and to provide local people with cheap and affordable energy.

The Prime Minister of Pakistan is in Germany for a two-day state visit and to attend the 50 Years of Bilateral Investment Treaties Conference organized by the German Government. In 1959 Pakistan and Germany signed the first ever Bilateral Treaty of the World.

Germany is a very important investment partner of Pakistan and many German companies are operating in Pakistan. The two countries have replaced their 50-year-old Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) with a more dynamic and pragmatic Investment Treaty which was signed in Berlin in the presence of Pakistani Premier and German Chancellor. The new Treaty envisages a dynamic era of investment relations between the two countries. The signing of the MOU between Azur Solar and Raza Impex is a very significant example for stepping again into the pioneer footprints of the relationship of both countries

Any companies manufacturing or planning to manufacture the components for solar and wind energy equipment in Pakistan, given the number of projects in the pipeline?

Any companies manufacturing or planning to manufacture the components for solar and wind energy equipment in Pakistan, given the number of projects in the pipeline?

Solar PV cells are manufactured by just one company in Pakistan. The company is Akhter Solar Limited (part of the famous Akhter Group of Companies which have their domestic computer line as well).

Wind turbines aren't constructed. Limited work on generators has been done locally and micro-wind projects have been supported by domestic manufacturers. But we don't have a Suzlon Energy in our country.

Won't be off-topic I guess. Here's an interview with the CEO.

New age of solar panel
By Saquib Nisar Khattak

Mr. Naveed Iqbal is the Director & CEO of Akhter Solar Limited. He graduated in Cost & Management Accountancy from Institute of Cost & Management Accountants and is an Associate Member of Cost & Management Accountants of Pakistan. Mr. Iqbal originally worked as a finance expert for Akhter Group Limited prior to setting up of Akhter Solar Limited in 2005. He continues to be responsible for the overall control and direction of Akhter Solar Limited, a role he also performs for the Group's other activities in Pakistan. He was appointed in December 2005. He has a vast experience of over 10 years in IT & Communication Sector. And over 5 years experience in energy sector of Pakistan

1. Kindly briefly tell us about your organization?
Akhter Solar was established as a Public Limited Company under registered article in 2005 with its primary aim to become the first foundation of Solar Panel Industry in Pakistan, manufacturing PV modules with all the various requisites of the silicon industry. The
State of the art technology was introduced in the most significant and innovative trend at the first-ever manufacturing facility in Pakistan located in the heart of Hattar Industrial area, adjacent to the Haripur vicinity in North West of Islamabad (Pakistan). It is one of its own kind Industry producing Hi Tech and precise quality PV Modules in different sizes and adjustment.

Akhter Solar is a subsidiary of Akhter Group Plc United Kingdom. Prof. Humayun Mughal, Chairman and CEO of the group leads the team of Professionals in Pakistan to ensure that quality standards are horizontally and vertically maintained in a manner that end-product meets all international standards and is comparable with any other quality global product.

The main virtue behind this generation venture has been to introduce the most compatible Photovoltaic modules, getting to the zenith of technology orientation in the field of alternate energy production and its meaningful utility. Here Akhter Solar devised a new pattern of meeting the 21st century challenges in a modern sphere renovating the silicon characteristics in the field of energy generation.

2. Do you feel competition in Pakistani?
Not directly. Akhter Solar Limited is the only manufacturer of solar modules in Pakistan. If comes to price competition, we face immense competition with Chinese modules, whereas our prime focus is competing in quality with European modules.

3. What is your edge over your competitors?
In our solar modules we only use solar cells (Which is the prime power generation engine) manufactured by Q-cells Germany who is the largest & one of the pioneers in solar cells manufacturing globally. We have already entered in new age of solar panels by introducing concentrator photovoltaic modules.

4. What is the scope of investment in Solar Energy and how do you see its future?
The scope of investment in Solar Energy is very high. Not only can it address the energy shortage in Pakistan to some extent but can also be used as a huge potential in infrastructural development of the country. Future is solar due to constantly increase in prices of liquid fuels and we are expecting break even for cost of electricity produce from liquid fuel and solar panels in 2012.

5. In your view what could be the solutions of current energy crisis in Pakistan ?
In Current energy crisis government has to encourage people to reduce usage of UPS as back up storage due to high losses rate in UPS. Solar panels should be used to produce electricity at least for back up usage. Solar panels are best source for electricity to store for back up use. The government needs to enhance energy resources on both long term & short term basis.
We have to improve our energy mix and should add more electricity resources in our energy basket to achieve abundant electricity at average affordable prices. Pakistan has very very huge potential for solar due to its location and weather conditions. Building of new dams is a long term strategy. In short term, the government must subsidize and create greater awareness of alternate energy solutions usage in Pakistan. As a nation, we need to learn our responsibility of energy conservation to help the government in energy crisis both at individual and community levels.

6. What are future plans of your company in Pakistan ?
We are AlHamdulillah expanding our production capacity to 76MW per annum from 37MW per annum in near future. The long term planning could include transfer-of-technology and local manufacturing of solar cells. We have already procure more land for new plant. CPV is new technology in solar energy and Akhter solar is proud to have CPV modules with cells manufactured by us and sign an agreement in spain for installation of 100KW solar power plant using CPV modules. Module installation is in progress and we already shipped CPV modules manufactured in Pakistan at our own facility.

7. Would you like to tell us issues & challenges in Solar Energy & Suggest Solutions?
So far solar energy is only feasible for small Solar home systems in Pakistan due to non availability of feedin tariff. If reverse metering or net metering is introduced in Pakistan along with good feedin tariff, a significant number of industrial concerns & households will be encouraged to use solar energy and not only grid usage will be reduced but in many cases it will be supplemented with supply of energy to grid. The best solutions could be energy conservation, appropriate usage, improvisation of new energy sources and enhanced usage of alternate energy solutions as resources are abundantly available locally.

well if we talk about Solar equipments, there are couple of companies manufacturing solar heaters, boilers, fans, lights, panels and other electronic gadgets. I have personally contacted couple of companies to know their quotations. Some companies partially manufacture solar equipments in Pakistan and import some parts from china while other companies manufacturing 100% domestically.

If we talk about Solar PV Cells then sparklingway already answered your query

@ Wind turbines

The turbine manufacturer Fuhrländer of Germany and Access Energy Inc of United States have signed an agreement with Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) of Pakistan, to manufacture wind turbines in Pakistan to help establish wind power projects. US-based Access Energy would finance the project to set up a 50 MW wind power plant along the general wind corridor in Gharo, while the German Company, Fuhrländer, would transfer the technology to Pakistan for manufacturing of wind turbines along with its accessories to set up a minimum of 1000 MW power plants. Halcrow Pakistan has compiled the Enivoronmental Impact Assessment for this project.

So expect some transfer of technology in next couple of years if its not yet available

It's Alternate Energy Development Board. Working Office has been shifted now.

I've worked on a number of experimental projects with them.

A very good move,
but
why Sindh & balochistan government goes to get wind power electricity.
they have very rich cost to produce electricity.

thats great

In UK the Government is offering people grants to produce in house solar power and offering to buy the power in excess from them. This is more pertinent to Pakistan where we have a lot more sunshine. Is this a plausible solution to the problems faced in our cities at least? Do you have any idea whether this would be possible in Pakistan.
Thanks
Araz
