After the failure of 1857 rebellion the Muslims all across India were persecuted for their loyalties. The thugs that provided men and material to the Raj were handsomely rewarded with massive allotments of land and titles. The formula the English used to appease the Scottish rebellion was fully implemented here.By the start of the 20th century the areas comprising of present day Pakistan was fully under the influence of the allied Feudals,Peers,Nawabs and their Cohorts. The families of these allies(traitors) were taken care of by awarding them the top slots in the Civil,Military,Judiciary and other institutions.
Gimmick Election stunts were introduced by the British to appease the discontent of the masses in the early 20th century.In Punjab Unionist Party was formed to represent the interests of Punjab's large feudal classes and gentry and in Sindh United Party was launched to serve the same purpose.
Ironically for the first time in 1937 All India Muslim League only won 2 seats out of 175 in Punjab and non in Sindh and NWFP. The Premier of Punjab was Khan Bahadur Captain Sir Sikandar Hayat Khan, KBE,MBE (Mil).
And in Sindh the premier was Khan Bahadur Sir Allah Bux Muhammad Umar Soomro OBE.
It must be noted that the titles received by the two gentlemen tells the whole story. Under no circumstances the British were willing to give fundamental rights of fair adult franchise to Muslim dominated regions.Nevertheless the INC (Congress) enjoyed the full support of the Establishment and swept the remaining India again.
After the end of the second World War Britain was considerably weakened and it was immensely paranoid by the sweeping advances made by the Red Army(USSR) towards Berlin in the West,towards Manchuria in the East, towards the Baltic States in the South and its firm intentions to access the major oil supply routes on the Arabian Sea towards the South East.
After the Great war it was decided in principle that a second buffer state is needed to counter the USSR menace(British India library Archives Whitehall London). The Allies were greatly pleased by the services of the Muslim Soldiers in the African and Burmese fronts. Their Bravery,Obedience,Trustworthiness and the desire to serve prompted a radical change of thought in the Whitehall(British Establishment). It was decided to help the AIML who wanted separation. All the landlords,peers,nawabs and other notables were asked to support AIML and switch sides.In the elections of 1946 a miracle happened and Muslim League won a landslide. In Punjab it won a whooping 73 seats with the second party INC winning 53 seats.Same happened in Sindh with AIML winning the larger chunk.In NWFP INC retained its stake but a referendum was called in to support Pakistan.In Baluchistan the Khan of Kalat was asked to Support Quaid e azam.
Cut story short in present day Pakistan these same corrupt families still hold the sway. They were made to run for their money in the 1970 elections but were again given a life line in the 1985 non party based elections. As we speak we are still dwelling on the same mindset that prevailed a century ago with the powerful still moving the strings and the corrupt leaches still enjoying and sucking the blood of our nation.
