Gaza's Lone Power Plant Shuts Down

VOA News 07 August 2010

Palestinian authorities in Gaza have shut down the territory's only power plant after running out of fuel in the middle of a heatwave.

Saturday's shutdown affects about a half million people living in Gaza City and its surroundings.

Temperatures there have been soaring to more than 30 degrees Celsius in recent days, sparking an increase in demand for air conditioning and refrigeration. But power plant officials say they do not have enough fuel to keep electricity flowing.

Fuel for the plant comes from the rival Palestinian government in the West Bank, which accused officials in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip of failing to make scheduled payments.

The ongoing dispute had already limited the amount of electricity being produced at the Gaza power plant, providing residents with only six to 10 hours of power per day.

Engineers in Gaza warn the blackout could last days without emergency fuel shipments.

The Reuters news agency said Saturday that the power outage was affecting hospitals and water wells. It also said the blackout cut power to the territory's sewage treatment plant, which was allowing waste to spill into the Mediterranean. As a result, Gazans hoping to get relief from the heat were banned from swimming in the sea.

The Gaza power plant supplies the territory with about one-third of its electricity. The rest comes from Israel and Egypt.

This is really inhumane. If Israel wants less suicide bombers they should try to treat Palestinians like people.

Because for true anti-Semites, Jews must always be the ones to blame.

Again with the inability to distinguish between Israel and Jews. Supporting Israel's foreign policy is not the samething as loving Jews and not supporting Israel's foreign policy is not the samething as hating Jews.

If only you could make that distinction, you sleep a little easier.

I'm not even commenting on Israel's treatment of Palestinians here but only the practical issue of if you treat an occupied people better they are less liable to attack you.

Although I probably can't convince Solomon that I am not some chinese anti-semite (has anyone even heard of such a thing?)

The article didn't say that Israel had suspended transmitting electricity to Gaza, did it? And you still think of Gazans as "an occupied people"! Why shouldn't everybody think that your mind isn't processing information correctly?

The emphasis of the sentence is on If They want less suicide bombers meaning if they want less problems from the Palestinian occupied zones, how I describe their mistreatment is irrelevant. Counter insurgency doctrine suggest, actions that antagonize a population will lead to instability.

Call me irrational if you'd like but I venture to guess that during an Israeli blockade where even food and building material have a hard time getting through, fuel supplies may be similarly affected. I am going to ignore you from now on, I hope you'll do me the same courtesy.
