Putting religious bigotry that's crept in here aside, here is something I read sometime ago that made sense.

God is formless and formfull. But human mind finds it difficult to focus fully on the formless. Hence we create attributes such as forms. Hindus use different physical forms. Muslims use mechanisms called rakat,taqbir and Arabic verses to help focus. ....

Now I've no idea what these things mean, may be somebody here familiar with it can elaborate.
