RIO DE JANEIRO: Two Mongolian coaches stripped off and hurled their shoes in protest on Sunday after their wrestler Mandakhnaran Ganzorig was denied victory for running away from his Uzbek opponent in the dying seconds of their bronze medal contest.

Ganzorig, leading Ikhtiyor Navruzov by seven points to six, taunted his opponent by dancing around him in the last 18 seconds of their 65kg match and was then carried around the ring in triumph by one of his coaches.

But the judges then adjusted the score to 7-7, penalising the Mongolian for ‘fleeing the hold’, or refusing to engage with his opponent. They then added a further point to the Uzbek’s score after the Mongolian corner challenged the decision and had the challenge rejected.

Ganzorig crouched head down on the mat in disbelief at the reversal as both coaches advanced toward the judges, stripped off their shirts and shoes and hurled them to the floor.

With the crowd erupting, one of them then took off his track pants and remonstrated with the judges wearing nothing but a pair of trunks.

One of the coaches, Byambarenchin Bayaraa, told reporters later: “This was a protest. There was a problem with the refereeing… Three million people in Mongolia waited for this bronze medal and now we have no medal.”

Navruzov, the victor, celebrated by wrestling his coach to the floor and then kneeling on the mat as if in prayer.

“He tried to run (away). This cannot happen. I have little respect for him and for his trainer,” said the Uzbek.

I saw the entire bout and the hilarious fracas that followed. For a moment there I thought I was going to have to quickly shut off the tv before the fat coaches stripped their underwear off as well. Till the bare chest part was bad enough. An angry version of Saurav Ganguly's shirt waving at Lords. But when the pants followed, I panicked. To be honest the Mongolian was leading and he was then in the last few seconds evading the Uzbek wrestler's clinch by pretending to be celebrating. You simply cannot do that in a sport where one point is awarded even against full lock clinch passivity. And we have seen bouts been won in the last few seconds, like our own girl Sakshi. So yes, I have no sympathy for the Mongol.

This is really annoying , matches these days are decided by referees and not wrestlers. The mongolian wrestler was winning 7-6 and started celebrating with just 5 seconds left in the match. Thinking he had won. However, he was penalized for not engaging at the end of the match, giving the point and criteria victory to the Uzbekistan wrestler. This is seriously unfair, and the referee seems to be on a power trip.

1 point is nothing in wrestling. A split second move can win you 4.

And 5 seconds is an eternity in wrestling. Especially to the opponent who is trailing by a point.

If the Uzbek had tied 7 all, he would have won the bout on the basis of winning the last point. Those are the rules.

That was best tit for tat to stupid & uneducated Indian crowd. Enjoyed it so much.

I enjoyed Pakistan winning a big fat 0 at the olympics too with your hockey team not even qualifying :D...enjoy your title of worlds largest nation with 0 medals this year again (along with Bangladesh).

Enjoy. :enjoy:

Thanks for your disapproval.

I'm just pulling your leg btw....(and I know you are too for me hehe). I want to see Pakistan + India reclaim their hockey glory of yesteryear somehow.....and also for Pakistan to expand into more sports. India should not carry sporting burden of South Asia at olympics alone :)

I actually think we played better hockey this time than we have for a long time now.

Yes there is marked improvement....and medals will come with time....but we cannot slack off anymore like we did in the past after some success.

The temperament of the players has to be improved even more (though I do enjoy their go getter aggresive style these days).

They are also faster and fitter. Playing long passes better. And their trapping is almost European class now. Clean. Sure.

I still think PQ conversion is a weak area. Our defense is looking much better.
