FSC. The Reason Why We Lag Behind

I always wanted to be a doctor. Dean of Medicine, to be specific. The dream of being a specialist, walking around the hospital with confidence like Hugh Laurie was utter ecstasy to me. It was all I ever wanted. There were no doubts of another career, as it had become a universal statement that I’ll one day put on my white coat and go out to work.

In my FSc Part 1 result, I scored extremely poor marks. Alas, no dream no more.

The biggest regret in my life? I chose FSc over A levels.

FSc in Pakistan is generally extremely corrupted at the core level, where the purpose of obtaining the degree is not to groom the mind, but to obtain the highest marks possible-be it via cheating or cramming the substandard books.

THE BOOKS:
The Government of Pakistan has prescribed cheap books so that the general public (that is mostly poor in Pakistan) can easily afford education. The intention is commendable. However, the implementation is seriously flawed. While the bad binding or cheap paper quality is an acceptable compromise, the books themselves haven’t been edited for a very long time. Take a look at the 2016 version of English Book:

For 16 years, none of the editors cared to remove the old and outdated article. The prescribed reference storybook, Goodbye Mr. Chips, has been around for an incredibly long time. Even my parents, who are more than 30 years older than me, had the same book as a reference.

These complaints are just the tip of the iceberg.

Aside from that, incorrect information with wrong factual data is recurrent, with grammatical errors, spelling mistakes and blank pages occurring every now and then.

Ignoring the errors, the writing itself is very poor indeed. There is no provocative or innovative method of teaching, with the writers usually thinking that adding difficult vocabulary automatically makes the writing professional. The case is the quite the opposite, with good books generally investing more on easy yet associative writing along with examples that readers can relate to. But these books are made on the ground principle that they’ll only be used for cramming.

However, books that do try to explain try, and fail miserably. Take the Physics books, for example. For the sake of making a good impression, everything that is written, is off topic. The solutions are extremely complicated and an article is explained in such a way that the reader has to skim the whole page to find one important point from all the irrelevant data.

Frankly, I wouldn’t mind half of the issues as long as the writers tried their best. Anyone who has read these books will agree with me that they don’t.

Exams:
I always felt pity for the invigilators. Hard working class people who sign up for invigilation to make extra money, to make ends meet. It’s a hard job. They’re vigilant and have to walk around for 3 hours in a hall full of humidity and no air conditioning.

Until one day, one of the invigilators came towards me when I was giving my Chemistry exam, he asked me whether I had finished up my MCQs and upon the nod of my head, took my paper and gave it to another guy just a few tables ahead of me. Another time, another invigilator came to me and ordered me to write all the mcqs on a piece of paper and give it to him. Of course, I wrote the wrong answers, but that’s certainly not the point. Cheating is a tradition here at FSc, something that is widely and strictly condemned everywhere and it’s truly infuriating to see that Board Examinations have a reputation for cheating.

Do I strike to you as a guy with no backed up evidence?

Institutions and Learning:
There was a time when going to a tuition academy was a little embarrassing. Only the dumbest of us had to go.

Right now, these academies are trampled by a hoard of students. Institutions like Unique and KIPS convert them into an army of crammers. Whose fault is it?

It’s everyone’s actually.

FSc institutions first of all take large sums of fees from students, and then employ mediocre teachers who say “You don’t need tuition if you study what I teach you”, and then remain absent for half of the year. They then teach inadequately and quickly when they realize that they have to finish the course. Students don’t even bother asking questions then, since they know that they’ll eventually just learn the topic without having a remote idea of the concept. Academies aid them in doing so.

In short, these colleges just take fees from students and in return give them the degree. There is no actual learning process. The course itself is too much for anyone who learns everything conceptually. Six subjects. Students have to literally learn a dozen things per page. That eventually winds up to a huge course that is way too much.

I think it’s safe to say that people who have completed their schooling should look into their prospects and what they want to do in their life. This is done by choosing the subjects they are interested in and actually learn something so that they can build themselves for a professional life. Instead, they rather are forced to go to academies that help them decipher whatever the hell Ghalib said.

It’s completely preposterous that people are forced to study Urdu to become a doctor. It’s good for people who are interested in languages and/or who intend to become teachers. But what concern is it of a chemical engineer about when did (spoiler alert!) Katherine die? Does it help in his ability to process or inspect chemicals? No! Though the government thinks so.

Many people, myself included, have been left behind, failed, tarnished. Just because we didn’t know when did Katherine die.

The subjects of languages are the worst subjects taught at FSc. The worst institution is the one that says you have to learn languages. For English, forget grammar. Tell us all about Brookfield. I am interested in learning Spanish. I guess instead of learning how to read, write or speak in Spanish, I should just memorize when did the Colombian Pablo Escobar died. While on the other hand, all the international examinations of English request you to read a comprehension or simply write an essay. They then evaluate you on the basis of how good your writing is.

Urdu’s subject is even worse. In essays, you have to write at least 8 pages to get decent marks. 8 pages. Those 8 pages are filled up with big handwriting, stanzas and just plain trash. Instead of just giving a comprehension, they’ll give you a ghazal (poem) and you’ll have to decide who wrote it. I have literally seen people memorizing the names of writers written vertically on the book during the last minutes before exams. Is this what the Urdu language is limited to? Memorizing writers and topic names?

Checking:

I’m sure the reason behind Bill Gates success was not that he gave the general public a software that allowed them to easily use a computer-it was just because he wrote well. He wrote beautifully. Not quite sure about everyone else but our Government thinks so. In order to get good marks, students have to write beautifully. They have to buy cut nib markers, fountain pens (ball pens are condemned) and also have to learn how to write beautifully with headings by markers. To add insult to injury, they have to draw margin lines with a marker too just so that the page looks even more ‘beautiful’. Well, can’t the Board just give pages with printed margins? I’d rather give an extra 1000 PKR for one of those. Why is it that students have to write like Picasso and spend the first 10 minutes drawing lines in the exams?

One word reply: Examiners
People who don’t have enough qualifications to be appointed by any academy just volunteer to check the papers. They are the reason the whole system is corrupted. They get some rupees per paper, so they have to rush and skim so that they can check as many papers as they can before going home and all of this checking has to happen in the summers.

Pakistan is generally known for its extreme temperatures. This is the reason many of our dear examiners are always in an irritable mood as they just want to go home. They check as fast as possible, and that results in them generally favoring a paper with good handwriting. Someone who has written pure baloney in an extremely beautiful handwriting will obviously get full marks in FSc. What’s extremely frustrating is that the Board of Education is so stupid; they don’t even send a marking scheme. This results in every examiner judging every paper differently. Some, admittedly are good checkers, others (I’m not joking) measure the writing with their palm and give 1 mark per palm. I’ve heard many people pray and ask me to wish them luck on their result day. What’s revolting is that they say, “Pray that I get a good examiner”.

Is there any need for an overview after all that I just wrote?

To all those who feel depressed after reading this, don’t worry. The Government has announced that the Orange Train’s coming in very soon!

Only good quality schools offer that.
Which are out of an average families range.

Oh God,I can't agree more.

I have been through ALL of this trash in my life.I scored a decent 85% in my FSc but I don't know it was worth it or not.

The difference between A levels curriculum and FSc is very clear.

A levels focus on building strong concepts of a smaller volume of curriculum.
While the FSc focuses on feeding you everything without any concepts.

The result is that FSc students are generally way more hard working ( thanks to the tonnes of course load ) and way more dumber than their A levels counterparts.

But again, A levels is damn expensive in Pakistan.

Need to change the mentality and revise the curriculum thoroughly . I totally agree with cramping part , students here are just cramming , most of them .

It's high time we do a complete overhaul of our education system. I don't think Intermediate is the bigger problem but our lack of focus on primary education is. If you give kids a good base they can do well anywhere.

You say you regret doing FSc and should have opted for ALevels.

ALevels are an excellent option if you want to go abroad to study but they become a serious handicap if you want study medicine or engineering in Pakistan. You do realize that the quota for A level grads is very low as compared to students who have completed FSc from local boards

I just got in A levels . My subjects are Physics , Maths and Computer Studies :-)
In Cambridge the problem is the Fees per paper is very high like minimum 10k - 15k per subject , then you have to take Multiple Coaching which are also not cheap and in Karachi the minimum fees of a good college is 30k + per month For example Nixor , Cedar , BCCD , Lyceum !

BTW FSC is shit , too much corruption you give 40k and get 90 % marks .

In Cambridge my two friend cheated and marked most of the MCQs same , After there papers were checked they got banned for I think 5 years and they are still struggling because of that .

My Maths teacher once told me that an average Olevels grade 10 or 11 student can solve Inter/FSC maths easily .

Well though I think A/O level system would be better but a lot depends on the individual too especially in this time of internet and open courseware, a lot of great quality content is available for free especially for sciences and mathematics. As far as history and other social sciences are concerned, I really don't think any country teaches truth to her population whether it is Pakistan, USA or any other country etc... Also a lot of junk is available on internet.

Nice article , I agree with majority of the article.

I did attended the Federal exams - Metric , FSC 1 / FSC2 , so I did go thru the whole mess.
For those who are from Developed Nations.

Metric = Grade 10
FSc1 = Grade 11
FSc 2 = Grade 12

The grades you achieve during the FSC determine your fate if you will go into Engineering / Medical branches etc

Back to the Topic, while I never attended the "Famed O or A levels" , I was exposed to curriculum mostly imported from Singapore i.e English Books. These books between grade 4-7 made a huge impact due to the quality of the Material. The books were high end glossy paper , and after each chapter there were meaningful applicable exercises. Tremendously enjoyable. I really still remember few stories. But I remember I used to wait every year for new book so I can read new stories in them even before school starts.

Some where after grade 8 or 9th our school had to get the "Board's approved stuff". Obviously I don't remember a thing from those books.

Obviously I was expected to start writing Letters, Applications , and Essays. However no one in school bothers to explain the general principle of what is the "Design" structure for the over all Essay. What is the purpose of the exercise. And I really suffered , in the English exams not understanding why marks were being constantly deducted even when I was delivering 5-8 Pages. There were rumors which spread that stated, well if you want to get more then a certain mark you must deliver 8 pages of excellent "Material" . I passed thru the FSC with with pretty decent standard A , not A-1 but a respectable 'A'. This issue was not corrected until I officially joined teaching school for Developed country. Finally they discussed the "structure" of how you should construct the god damn Essay. From opening statement to the , meat of the article and the finishing statement. The full transformation did not happen till I graduated from University , picking up nice skills such as researching tones of books for quotes and references. And really researching from both literary perspective and also historic books. Learning to quote these books and articles in Essays and writing material.

I started to see evidence of "Cheating" from grade 8th. I think in my class I had Top marks but I was forced to be #2 in Ranking just because the kid who was tied with me was cheating to get that extra edge. Never forget that incident , I think that was the first time I realized sometimes you can be best but still be forced to be second.

During Grade 9 , 10 the cheaters started to get more and more desperate. I used to hear stuff like if you mess up your grade 10 you can forget about having a life and this effected all the folks my age some of the people could not handle it and reverted to cheating started off slowly but in exam days you can see writing on desk , hands , or that little cheat sheat.

Luckily for me my parents took interest in my affairs , my grades did dip a little around grade 9 but with my Parent's personal interest I was able to make up for stuff missing in Teaching care.

During the FSC1 FSC2 years things started to get nasty , I mean I saw Teachers openly looking away in exams , if someone was a child of a Teacher or head master , the exam convener would come and ask "Son do you need anything" . Kids would be allowed to take a break to go to washroom and there would be books there for them to look for answers. People openly exchanging paper sheets etc . I just looked and kept working away survived the ordeal
got my grades with out resorting to cheating.

But looking back , I felt ashamed when I saw teachers and conveners helping kids cheat, it was perhaps the lowest point of the Education system. Little did I know , the process was being abused all over Pakistan, which is why we see these 'Fake' degree holders , or the folks who can't even write their own name. These problems are real.

It was also during the FSC years that I noticed the stuff taught in normal lecture time , and what came in exam did not correlate, and folks resorted to "Extra studies" after school where they focused more time and effort to explain certain concepts. Some of those kids who had that privilege yes they had an edge but I went thru FSC with out ever being officially registered in any "Extra studies group". My only source for help were my parents mostly my father and yes I did benefit from his intervention.

I will acknowledge we did had some brilliant students some were regretfully were better then me, but I say that becasue I wanted to out perform them.

But still I saw a lot of negative stuff happening in FSC years

After moving to Schooling system for Developed country things really changed , I had to redo 1 year of English but it really benefited me. And every thing was so much "Student friendly" . No longer did I had to memorize 100-300 page books. Because god forbid if your explanation was off by a sentence marks would be deducted. But the goal for education was around an idea, we (the school) are teaching you "this measurable amount" can you absorb what we taught you. Prove it in a small quiz. And then of course Mid term and Finals. But emphasis was on Learning and doing well in Quizzes. The over all marks award and its impact on your graduation was controlled. More focus was on your achivement in Quizzes and year long effort in home work and study. Not on 1 single day which we call the "Final Exam" date.

In term of English, I never quite became a literary genius , however I managed to get a respectable grade acceptable in the most prestigious of Schools.

So looking back ,

What would I do to change this
  • Better Trained Teachers equals better quality of Teaching. Better salaries
  • International Standard Books specially for science (Imported)
  • Emphasis on English , but again depends on course and Teacher.
  • Curb on Cheating in Final Exams from Grade 9 all the way to Grade 12.
  • Honest Teachers that care for kids so they would stop cheating
  • Higher emphasis on Home work , and Quizzes and attendance.
  • Reuse of Books in schools (Recycle for 5 years to cut cost)
  • Science & Math books have to be updates with Latest knowledge
  • Prison term for Teachers and Revoke of Teaching License if caught promoting cheating
*Those poetry debates and general debates are 100% useless , all these people end up being employed by political talk shows to "yap" all day. Ever noticed those Ramzan family shows , where they ask questions to offer gifts. They no longer ask a "General Knowledge" question , they now ask them to sing a "song" or Guess a number between 1-10. That shows the level of decay in the knowledge level in our society. Similarly all those religious arts degrees are also useless. We need to limit people going in those areas

Today when I look around in Pakistan or follow the news , I feel the Cheaters have infiltrated all institutes (except military). Majority of the politicians relay on fake degrees or fake credential. Some people with petty background managed to become Minster of important positions in Pakistan. The lack of quality Human Resources is what has crippled major Corporations in Pakistan like PIA or steels Mills or Railways. There are various politicians running around with PHD but when you really engage them all they can do is "YELL".

  • Our Police department : Uneducated , Low grade requirements , Low pay
  • Our Corporate workers : Lack behind in English , and Critical Thinking
  • High End Political Workers: Mostly positions are held by Cheaters
  • Nationalized corporations : Filled up hiring quota with Mamu Chacha , low quality standard

The biggest problem in our society is an idea is embedded in the mind of a student from grade 7-8th that cheating is acceptable practice. Later these people under perform , cheat the system in taxes, or get hired by fake credentials , or even get hired by Purchi (fake recommendations) or worse political affiliation

And there is no shortage of "Alim Baba" , mystical healers in Pakistani society uneducated herbal doctors. Sometimes I wonder if these "Alim Baba" are more dangerous of the folks opening Clinics with fake degrees

With that stated I do want to stress yes there were "Brilliant" Genius students that I also met who did not follow the dark path. But we were all bothered by the practices we saw.

Almost all the Gifted kids from my batch eventually succeeded who believed in Doing it the right way

If your fundamentals are correct you will succeed without Cheating

Example: Just look at the Brain drain in one batch
  • Some got hired in IBM , Pakistan
  • Some build video Games with EA sports , and then got hired with Microsoft (He wanted to be a Aeronautical Engineer , who knows he could have been building JF17 thunder)
  • Some moved to become Lawyer in UK
  • Some moved to Australia successful Engineer
  • Some started their own Company
  • Some now have a wonderful career in Banking
  • Some went into Marketing Management

I remember the days when I was doing FSC .. In my education, I've never been in such a slump. It was literally THE WORST time during my studies. I'd agree with most of the points made ... Looking back, I think the teachers not taking responsibility is by far the biggest issue that we have. Ofcourse we've been told and I too tend to agree with the statement that at the end of the day .. it's the students responsibility too as he/she is the one studying ... a teacher can't hand feed the student everything .. But this does not give the teachers a pass either.

There are colleges in Punjab that are famous for being more like juvenile centers than educational institutes. In my own class back in FSC-1 an english teacher beat the living hell out of a student to the point where his parents ended up calling the police on that teacher. Nothing happened at the end though. It was the same story of physical abuse from the next day onward. There have been incidents where mobile phones were discovered from the students ( yeah I said discovered cuz they were not allowed) .. instead of confiscating them and giving them back at the end of the day .. like normal educational institutions all over the world ... the teachers would get the student that owned that very mobile device to stomp on it with his foot, until it broke.

I especially remember a case of a class mate, a decent guy who was struggling with his urdu class. Now he had a darker skin tone. In this class, the teacher (the principal of the campus mind you) was distributing the marked papers .. and when he looked at his paper he went " His prospects are as bright as his face" ...

and your supposed to be learning in this environment ?

Funny thing though, the guy who did top our college .. who was the favorite among teachers because he was blessed with a good memory and used to memorize everything word for word ... Well after the board exams, which he passed with flying colors by the way .. he couldn't immediately get in to a university of his choice because he flunked the NTS test as those guys don't play the memory game...

Now what I disagree with is the assumption that the grass is greener on the other side with the O/ A-level kids .. well... I can't speak for how good the system is as I've not been in that system .. But I have looked at the products of O/A levels .. loads of them actually when I was doing my Bachelors degree in MS and lemme just say .... I've never seen such know it all epic failures whose entire mantra is to ask questions with an accent to "look smart" ...

In Management sciences you've gotta give loads of presentations and everything is more focused towards application .. Now these O/A level kids used to literally harass other kids who were doing their best in presentations in the question and answer session where every question posed was in English with an accent to create a "gotcha moment" for kids who studied in urdu medium schools and came from different parts of rural Balochistan, Sindh and KPK in pursuit of their education.

I remember once in a class of sociology where the discussion was feminism (was a hot topic those days with a feminism group being formed on the LUMS campus and students from different uni's taking notice etc.) .. and you had everyone of these kids chipping in about how we should strive towards equality and all. I remember raising a question regarding ... how change was brought in to the language for equality .. like you have fire fighters instead of fireman and police officer instead of policeman, yet somehow feminism forgot to change its own gender biased name even though it somehow "strives for equality" ... and none of these "thinkers" who were talking a minute ago as if feminism was the best thing that ever happened to humanity .. none of them even attempted at an answer ...

I just don't know anymore, the O/A levels may be superior in terms of books/ materials etc. but the end product isn't what its advertised to be either ... the best solution that we can come up with at this moment is to have better teachers and hope for the best....:cray::cray::cray:
