ERP stands for Enterprise Resource Planning. I want to learn about it and get certification by SAP. And I want to get it through distance learning. Where can get that?

Thanks in advance.

There is nothing long distance certificate in SAP. First of all ,you need to decide which way you want to go Technical (Basis/Security or ABAP/CRM/SRM) or functional.

Then study the course material suggested by SAP (You can get it from different websites, Do PM me if you want one).

Now you need to give Certification exam which has different rules in different country, Like in US you can straight away and give the certificagtion exam while in India you need to show that you are working on this are for past 3 years or you have taken paid training from suggested or (Like Siemens).

In India Siemens is the partner for SAP AG the German company. They provide certification after u clear the exam. Actually it is not needed in India but when u go overseas certain clients do require it.

However as Pride has pointed out decide Technical or functional. Again in Technical u want to be an ABAP er or BASIS Consultant??

What are the differences between technical and functional? I mostly studied in management.

Technical has 2 branches in SAP:-

1) Development: This will be a coding kind of job and one need to learn languages like ABAP, Webdynpro, Javascript for xMII etc

2) Administration or Basis: This is pure System building, Monitoring and Administration sort of job. One need to build new systems like ECC/SRM/CRM and then Use databases like Oracle/DB2 etc and hardware systems like mainframe etc. Database tuning, monitoring, Installing SAP, Role applying, Creating/ deleting/ unlocking users etc are their some of the responsibilities.

Then there comes Functional area. Being from management background, This is you area. Functionals understand businesses and their mapping to SAP System. So say, I am in Sales and marketing for few years and know all ins and outs of it. Now I study about SAP SD and map how current business scenario is mapped in SAP with transactions. Then it becomes a simulation of business learning into SAP.

In a Technical role there are the ABAPER's and the BASIS consultants.

The ABAPer is responsible for code development, where customization of product i.e. SAP is required. For example a business process like say invoice raising and clearing involves certain steps and each Business entity follows its own way, The SAP is built in a certain way (that is the process built in) which need not be similar (it seldom is) to the entity's. If the entity thinks that following SAP's process can do better for it then it can go the way and no customization is required. However if due to local business laws or some other things make it inevitable to follow its own process then the required steps can be customized where the ABAPer can help.

The above example is only for understanding, actually SAP is not just a developed product its an evolution in its own. So seldom processes need to be changed. However certain areas do need customization to suit Client's needs.

As a BASIS consultant the work u are required to do is that of a DBA (Data Base Administrator) setting up Servers, providing authorizations and others like transportation of requests etc.

Now under Functional module i think at present SAP has some 51 modules which again if broke down for ease of learning better (however certification is given for a module level only like FI, CO, SD or MM etc) contain several more sub modules (A module is nothing but a particular area of the whole).

Under Functional Module different consultants with some years of experience work on certain areas, for example a FI consultant works on General Ledger or Accounts receivable or payable etc again under these in certain areas either in a "Implementation project" or "Maintenance Project" according to your level of expertise. Experience in certain areas is considered more important and garners more remuneration. Similarily people with Marketing experience work on Sd module (Sales and Distribution), people with eperience in Purchases work on MM module (Materials Management), experience in Project management like turnkey projects or other kind of projects makes you PM consultant( Project Management module). Hope u got the drift how your functional experience is useful to you in SAP work.

It is advisable that u have atleast a 2 to 3 years of functional experience before u work on related module as it gives u exposure to various issues u face in there and the situations in a pre and post ERP enviroment is even better.

You say that u studied management what is your expertise Finance or Marketing or what?? What is the kind of functional experience u possess (if any) till now?? IF u have further doubts ask me and i will let u know as much as i can.
