Fresh MoD order for 100 fighter jets on cards

The Ministry of Defence has decided to again invite foreign companies to make fighter jets in India. However, this time the foreign partners have been told to ‘make in India’.



The MoD has approved a proposal by the Indian Air Force to invite international manufacturers to produce 100 single-engine fighter jets. The expected cost is around $10 billion (Rs 65,000 crore). The IAF and the MoD have listed single-engine jets as top priority.


The new proposal is similar to the previous scraped tender in which the IAF had sought 126 medium multirole combat aircraft. The difference, however, is that the IAF will specify its single-engine requirement. During the previous tender scrapped in 2015, the IAF had made known its preference for a twin-engine jet.


The request for information — it’s the first step of the buying process — will be sent to identified global players who will come and join hands with an Indian partner to produce these planes under the “Make in India” initiative, source in the security establishment have confirmed to The Tribune.


The target is to acquire the first plane within three years of signing the agreement and finish the deliveries within the next seven. It is estimated that the agreement signing will take about two years. In other words, if everything goes well, the first plane would be in by 2021-2022. This will be done under the strategic partnership model announced by the Ministry of Defence in July. Under this, foreign companies and their Indian partners will bid for the project together.


The two possible single-engine plane makers who may be shortlisted are Saab of Sweden with its “Gripen-E” jet and Lockheed Martin of the US with its latest block 70 version of “F-16”. Both companies have made it known in public statements that they are ready to “make in India”.


The IAF needs some 200 single-engine planes to replace the Soviet/Russian origin MiG-21 and MiG-27 fighter jets. These are more than 35 years old. As per information tabled in Parliament in December 2016, the MiG-21 and MiG-27 are scheduled to retire in phases by 2024. The option of making indigenous fighter jet “Tejas” is being exercised to fill in the gap.

Us strategic partnership always gives only obsolete technology and weapon.Why not it providing f22 instead .50 f22 are better and effective than f 100 f 16.

If You go back and read the OP, You realize that it is not "strategic partnership" between
India and the country of the aircraft vendor.

So LM and Tata will be one team, and SAAB and Adani will be another team.
Other articles in this thread has indicated that India will accept offers from other civilian
companies, and it might end up with India selecting an aircraft vendor and a manufacturer in
India, and tell them to produce a joint offer.

LM will offer to dump their old F-16 manufacturing line to India.
SAAB will offer the setup of a brand new manufacturing line which
could include the 3D printing techniques they are using for the SAAB/Boeing T-X.

They also offer co-development of Tejas Mk 2 and AMCA and ToT of GaN AESA Radar.

If/when Kaveri comes into fruition, this is planned to replace the F-414 engine in the Tejas Mk 2.
There is no reason, that it could not replace the F-414 in the MII Gripen.

The weapons used by IAF are much more compatible with Gripen (Meteor etc.)

With F-16, India will have to buy a lot of American weapons that cannot be used
with Rafale or Tejas, without extensive work, or spend a lot of work
to qualify the existing missiles for F-16. LM has no incentive to help, so India is on her own.

Such work for the F-16 involves digging deep into the core functionality of the S/W.
SAAB much more modern S/W architecture has separated the core functionality of flying from other stuff, so if India want a new weapon, they develop an "App" which can be completed in days, instead of in years. SAAB has incentive to help, because adding stuff to the Gripen will
increase the interest worldwide for the aircraft.

India is desperate to increase its fighter strength.
The F-16 production line is ready to churn out aircrafts NOW.
Still, India wants to wait until 2021, when it really the first time they will be able to get Gripen.
(Sweden and Brazil will get the first production aircrafts in 2019).

Why wait, if the F-16 is what everyone wants?

F-35 is there if india wants.
Its india that is going for f-16, not US fault.

But, according to sources, the Defence Ministry is in a “fix” as far as selecting the jets are concerned. This is because both SAAB and Lockheed Martin have sweetened their offers under the government’s ‘Make in India’ programme. “Gripen E may be more attractive price wise. But the selection should be done based on which aircraft gives us more strategic reach,” said Former Air Chief Marshall AY Tipnis.

LM is not offering F-35 to India, not even for the IN Navy requirement.
Too much close ties with the Russians, I think.

Selection of f-16 will open way for f-35 too(water down version). Americans will need something to maintain their supply lines in india.

Russians wont give us critical tech even after being a partner in their t-50 program. No body does so, U.S is not any exception.

The former Air Chief Marshal resigned from his position in 2001.
Others, with actual decision power might not share his opinion.

SAAB will share some ToT if it results in long term sustainable business with India.
Noone will give away ToT unless there is a business case for it.
 
Gripen E will have edge over F-16 block 60 imo....
 
f16 will be bette4 than gripen.

because it comes with whole package from one country.
gripen will gace bigger problem becuse of sweden will face problem with 20% muslim population and many immigrants

Because the F-22 is not produced anymore
and since only 187 were made, I strongly
doubt that America would sell 50 even to its
best ally which is not India in any case?

For Indian defence deals agenda is corruption fighter jet will be chooseon best corruption from a jet they can get
