The French navy¡¯s 417-ft-long anti-submarine warfare destroyer ship FS Dupleix arrived at the Indira Docks of Mumbai¡¯s port on Thursday morning to conduct a training exercise with the Indian Western Fleet on anti-piracy operations.
¡°We arrived on a six-day callfrom October 25 to 30 to conduct sea training exercises with Indian Navy forces and will later set sail for Seychelles and carry out anti-piracy patrols,¡± the ship¡¯s 44-year-old captain, Luc Raynal, told DNA .
Speaking on piracy in the seas, Captain Raynal said thatfigures show a decline in piracy this year.
FS Dupleix left her homeport Toulon in France early in September for a three-and-a-half-month deployment in the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf. The ship maintains the highest standards in weaponry systems and combatcapabilities. Adorned with statues of elephants, it is named after Joseph-Fran0Š4ois Marquis Dupleix, an 18th century governor general of the French establishment in India.
Governor Dupleix was sent to India at a young age. He initially became the director of a trading post, but later became the governor of Pondicherry. Joining hands with the local authorities and princes, he managed to fight the British influence and create a commercial empire under French protection.
The long-standing strategic partnership between France and India has given rise to a number of joint exercises between the armed forces. The annual ¡®Varuna¡¯ exercise, the latest edition of which was held in July 2012 in the Mediterranean, has been a key event for the French and Indian navies since it wasfirst conducted in the 90s.
