Key Points
  • The French Navy's second Aquitaine-class multimission frigate, Provence, is approaching the end of its five-month deployment
  • The ship is expected to be commissioned soon after it returns to its homeport of Brest in April 2016
The second Aquitaine-class Frégate Européenne Multi-Missions (FREMM) frigate for the French Navy, Provence (D 652), is close to being declared fully operational as it embarks on the final weeks of its five-month deployment.

Provence is the second of eight FREMM frigates - known as the Aquitaine-class in French Navy service - built or under order from French shipbuilder DCNS. Construction of the ship commenced in Lorient, western France, in December 2010 and delivered to the navy in June 2015.

Captain Dominique Caillé, commanding officer of Provence , told IHS Jane's during a port call at Singapore's Changi Naval Base that he is confident that the ship will be commissioned after it returns to its homeport of Brest in western France in April. The 6,000-tonne frigate, which measures 142 m in length, is currently on a five-month deployment to test its capabilities.

DCNS delivers multi-mission frigate Provence, the second FREMM for the French Navy

"We are engaged in a deployment to assess its readiness, although in a heavily loaded operational environment," Capt Caillé said. "For example, we were engaged in the Gulf [in January] working with the French and US carrier strike groups and it makes a real difference to test the ship's capabilities in the real world environment so we know exactly what is working and what needs to be adjusted."

Prior to its Singapore visit, the ship had conducted a two-day anti-submarine warfare (ASW) exercise with the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) in the waters of the South China Sea off the northern coast of Sabah, East Malaysia, on 16 and 17 February. The drill - which was the first of its kind in the area between French and Malaysian navies - had pitted Provence and its embarked NHIndustries NH-90 NFH naval helicopter against the RMN's Scorpène-class diesel-electric submarine, KD Tun Abdul Razak in a series of ASW scenarios, although Capt Caillé declined to reveal the specifics.
