1.300 volunteers were recruited this year. In 2018,the FFL will see its size reach 9K personnels.

A fact : In 1961 after the Algiers putsch, the General de Gaulle wanted to disband the Légion after its participation during the attempted coup d'état.

It is said that Légion was saved from disappearing by the MoD of then,Pierre Mesmer, former soldier of the 13th DBLE and a loyal gaullist, who convinced de Gaulle from not disbanding it.

At the beginning of the 20th century or same time 100 years ago around 1920's slavic people were in the Legion in Large numbers and they left their mark in the traditions. Like after WW2 so I wonder if 25 years from now Germans will be the large contingent again!!

service guarantees citizenship.

I honestly think it would be a good idea for Pakistan to start a similar concept. If we're totally honest with ourselves, a large chunk of the refugees have contributed to Pakistan's economy, and an even larger chunk will never leave, so why not give the later a way to gain citizenship, while serving their new home country?

It's remarkable how you manage to get people from across the world join the legion and became a elite fighting unit. Also surprised about number of recruits from Slavic countries.

Pakistan could easily recruit a legion sized force from Afghan refugees. Assure them citizenship and security to their family. And you would have fighting unit second to non. Take advice from the French and model it after their legion.

And, then send them to hunt down Doval the Devil's very own "Last Afgan"....

A Légionnaire can apply for the French citizenship after three years of service, and is granted in the majority of the cases.

Also Légionnaires can become "Français par le sang versé" ("French by spilled blood") if they are wounded in operation.

Those that serve under the flag and those that were injured while serving and fighting for France fully deserve it.

There's a full consensus on the matter.

What if they are in logistics during wartime and get a papercut something trivial like that, do they still get citizenship?

@Vergennes how does the recruitment work? Like anybody can apply and serve for France or it's only limited to overseas French people or people with French heritage?

Kinda confused

You go to France and present yourself at one of the recruiting centres. As long as you are Male and No serious criminal record.

Thanks for the info, I thought as much.

Honestly, if Pakistan were to start such a program, it could be a big success, considering the amount of migrants and refugees it has.

Actually I don't think this is a good idea to recruit Afghan as a type of legionnaire. Given their Green on Blue history.

The problem I think is vetting these Afghan, and since there are a lot of tribe/fraction around Afghanistan, people will give you different story about a same person and you basically become confused and don't really know who to trust. That is the reason why there are quite a handful of Taliban/Insurgent agent infiltrated into ANA/ANP.

Unless Pakistan can have a fool proof vetting process to these afghan refugee, it's not really recommended to give them a rifle and fight alongside your own troops....

On the other hand, once in a while Joining the FFL have appeared in my mind. But that was a long time ago...
