Free speech in the UK?

the article is a clear example to show why the muslims around the world are seen with suspicion------its because of assholes like these .....they spoil the dignity of the community as a whole.........britain should just bring in a law-"anyone supporting banned terrorist organisations can be arrested and detained for life" i think this would probably shut them up!!!!

What the hell are you talking about? I never see you ranting like this whenever Islam is being ridiculed by the Western cartoonists. If some people have the right to ridicule a religion and provoke certain communities, why not other way round? I don't endorse hate sowing from both ends. Although, we shouldn't apply double standards. Every action has a reaction.

.
However I don't know this guy, and from what you Brits are mentioning (and the articles have not lost any breath to keep reminding us in every sentence with adjectives such as "radical" and "extremist") seems like a terrorist sympathizer.

here he is, judge for yourselves:

He ends with stating that he could never condemn a fellow Muslim, no matter what they do (whether oppressed or oppressors) - I wonder if he would apply the same logic if one of his "fellow Muslims" murdered or "oppressed" his own mother?

Shariah is basically a legal system duty bound to withhold justice - Pertaining primeraily to Muslims as during the caliphates the non-Muslims were granted judicial autonomy with respect to disputes amongst themselves, personal affairs such as marriage etc, in accordance with what was sanctioned in the Qur'an:

4:47
Let the people of the Gospel judge by what Allah hath revealed therein. If any do fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (no better than) those who rebel.

Shariah falls apart the moment the oppressed and the oppressors are viewed in the same light, which is what this clown is doing. Shariah in fact allows non-Muslim minorities in Muslim lands (ie during caliphate time) to govern themselves.

Yet on the other hand, according to Anjum - shariah says all non-Muslims are guilty?

Does not compute!

why isn't he in prison, and why is he always on television?

^^ There is a reason for that, but i'll refrain from spelling it out in public.

I think we all know the reason. It is the same reason why, in the BBC show "Make me a Muslim", when they wanted to show a group of Muslim mentors, they chose the most alien looking individuals, with big scraggly beards and thick foreign accents, parading the streets of Britain wearing long Arabic robes.

Evidently, out of the millions of British Muslims, they couldn't find any who were well integrated, ordinary clean shaven citizens with British accents and normal casual dress.

It is part of the agenda to portray Muslims as aliens who do not fit into Western society.

Well, they do exist; Mr Anjum being a prime example.

I tend to look beyond the conspiracy nowadays; It's counterproductive.

Our fate is in our hands, not in the hands of the non-Muslims. If we persist to divide ourselves, we can't really blame the west - in my opinion. They are simply taking advantage of our stupidity.

There are always extremist kooks in any group. There are Hindutva loons in the US who want to convert it into a Hindu country, Aztlan types who want to merge the southwestern states into Mexico, and extremist Jews who call for the extermination of Arab 'dogs'.

The media only seeks out and highlights the Muslim crazies. I understand the media focus on Muslims after 9/11 and attempted terrorist acts, but I still think the media has a responsibility to present a balanced image instead of sensationalizing and stereotyping.

It's not quite clear how Muslims are supposed to 'control' these loons. Are Christians held accountable for the rantings of Evangelical loons? Are all blacks or Latinos or Asians condemned every time some guy of that ethnicity commits a crime?

When was the last time any of these "loons" tried to blow up a plane?

Time to embrace reality my friend.

Many commentators advocate war and bombing Muslim countries, which results in far greater civilian casualties than terrorist acts.

Time to embrace reality my friend.

Nobody is disputing the reality of terrorism and Islamic extremism. My point is about stereotyping and marginzaling a community. Police and anti-terrorism officials routinely caution that their best leads are from within the community, and that cooperation becomes more difficult when the community feels marginalized and trust lessens.

The media's role is to acknowledge that most Western Muslims are law abiding, patriotic citizens who are just as devastated by terrorist incidents as anyone else instead of portraying them as the alien enemy within.

Ah yes, I see your point and it's very much valid.

The recent case for example, the failed plane bombing on Christmas day, is a prime example whereby the bombers very own father warned authorities of his son yet NOTHING was done about it - he was not even placed onto the US "no-fly" list.

This seems very peculiar to say the least...

is it true that there is a story which claims this group was backed by certain jews?

something was telling me they a read a story on this, just wanted to know if it checked out.

This Anjum guy doesn't deserve to be a UK citizen and should be tried for treason.

Britain Moves to Ban Islamic Group

By JOHN F. BURNS, January 12, 2010

LONDON — Britain said Tuesday it was outlawing a radical Islamic group that had incited outrage by planning a protest march through the streets of a town made famous for its somber ceremonies honoring British soldiers killed in Afghanistan.

Alan Johnson, the British home secretary, said the move criminalizing membership in the banned group, Islam4UK, was a “tough but necessary power to tackle terrorism.” The ban, which takes effect Thursday, also outlawed other names used by the organization.

Last week, the British prime minister, Gordon Brown, said he was “personally appalled” by the group’s plans to march through Wootton Bassett, a town 70 miles west of London where residents have lined the streets for more than two years to pay respects to the passing hearses carrying the coffins of British soldiers flown home to a nearby military base.

Islam4UK decried Britain’s action in a statement posted to its Web site on Tuesday, saying that the prohibition of the group was “a clear case of the oppressor and tyrant blaming the oppressed.” On Sunday, the group scrapped plans for the march, which had sought to highlight what it called the “atrocities” committed by British troops in Afghanistan.

The organization has described itself as a platform for promoting the views of an extremist Islamic group, Al Muhajiroun, which praised the hijackers of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States as heroes, but disbanded in 2005 in response to a British government order banning it. Islam4UK says it has never advocated or been involved with violence.

The ban was announced one day after a court found five British Muslim men guilty of harassment and using insulting language during a protest they had staged at a separate parade welcoming British troops home from Afghanistan. The men had shouted slogans describing the soldiers as “murderers,” “rapists” and “baby killers.”

The highly unusual trial, in a district court in Luton, a town with a large Muslim population 30 miles north of London, was seen by the defendants’ supporters as a rare test of Britain’s liberal free speech laws. Lawyers for the men argued during testimony last week that they had been justified in the words they displayed on placards and shouted at the soldiers because they were speaking “the truth.”

But the district judge, Carolyn Mellanby, found five of the seven defendants guilty of offenses under Britain’s public order laws, specifically of using “threatening, abusive or insulting words” and of “behavior likely to cause harassment and distress.” The men were ordered to pay court costs of $800 each and given two-year conditional discharges, meaning that they would face additional penalties only if they were found guilty of similar offenses within 24 months.

The two other defendants were acquitted.

The convicted men — who had refused to stand for the judge in court, saying Islam forbade showing respect to anybody but the Prophet Muhammad — were unrepentant after the verdicts. Outside the court they waved a placard: “Islam will dominate! Freedom can go to hell.”

One of the defendants’ lawyers, Sonal Dashani, said, “If you believe in freedom of speech, you have to accept that some things will be said that you like, and some things will be said that you do not like.”
