France to provide combat copters

If the contract includes Aircrew Training Devices; Groundcrew Training Devices and Training Courses and Course Materiel the price tag is around 59 millions.
Strictly from Australian point of view. :woot:

Tiger used in anti terrorist activities at Pak-Af border can be a good marketing for its future sales.
Who knows it may be sold to Pakistan on promotional prices. ;)

PA's next-gen attack helicopter requirement stood at 30 aircraft in 2006, but it seems the tender wasn't dished out until very recently. Also keep in mind that the French are probably interested in replacing the PA's Puma and PN's Seaking with NH-90 TTH and NFH, respectively. We could see a deal for 20~25 NH-90 TTH & NFH as well as 20~30 Tiger.

ISLAMABAD: France will provide Tiger combat helicopters and military equipment to Pakistan to enhance its capacity to fight terrorism.

This was stated by Admiral Edouard Guillaud, Military Personal Staff Adviser to French President, during a series of meetings he held here on Thursday with top political and military leaders, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen Tariq Majid and Chief of the Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.

Official sources said that helicopters to be provided by France would be equipped with ground-to-ground missiles with semi-active laser seekers with a range of over 8km.

The multi-role helicopters have modern avionics and radars and can be equipped with anti-tank missiles.

Admiral Guillaud commended Pakistan’s determination and resolute action to clear its soil of terrorists and eliminate extremism.

An official of the French embassy said the visit of the delegation led by Admiral Guillaud was a follow-up to French visits by President Asif Ali Zardari and Army Chief Gen Kayani.

‘The fight against terrorism is a key matter of concern for the international community. Within the framework of our common goal to fight terrorism, this visit aims at strengthening our bilateral cooperation in the field of defence and security,’ he said.

He said France’s objective was to offer political and military cooperation and support to Pakistani authorities and strengthen their fight against terrorism and extremism.

‘France wishes to contribute to regional security and stability through reinforced dialogue on these matters.’

During the delegation’s meeting with President Zardari, the two sides decided to extend ties, especially in the field of defence, and the use of civilian nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

President’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar said that matters relating to Pak-France cooperation in different areas, the Friends of Pakistan initiative, rehabilitation of internally-displaced people and fight against militants were discussed at the meeting.

During his meeting with the delegation, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani called for a roadmap for pragmatic cooperation in the field of civil nuclear energy.

He proposed establishment of a working group to work out a plan for nuclear cooperation.

Referring to the army operation against militants in Malakand division and tribal areas, the prime minister urged France and other countries to support Pakistan by providing military equipment and assistance to effectively deal with terrorists.

The prime minister warned against the possibility of militants crossing over into the Pakistani territory, particularly in Balochistan, in the wake of enhanced deployment of US and Nato forces in Afghanistan.

The prime minister thanked France for the assistance it pledged at the Democratic Friends of Pakistan meeting in Tokyo for the displaced people of NWFP and said that Pakistan was looking forward to the visit of President Sarkozy when frameworks on defence and security and counter-terrorism and on economic and energy cooperation would be signed.

Admiral Guillaud said he hoped the two sides would make progress in the field of trade and economy and in civilian nuclear energy cooperation during visit of French Secretary of State for Foreign Trades to Pakistan on July 20.

Admiral Guillaud also called on Gen Tariq Majid, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), at the Joint Staff Headquarters. Both leaders exchanged views on regional situation and discussed possible areas of expansion of defence and security cooperation.

Gen Majid thanked the government of France for its political support to Pakistan, approval of 12 million euros as initial humanitarian aid for displaced people of Swat and affirmation of assistance for capacity building of Pakistan forces.

Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani held separate meetings at the General Headquarters with Admiral Guillaud and Gen Stanley McChrystal, Commander of International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), in Afghanistan.

Pakistan is going to pay for that?
Or its also an AID !!!!!

I don't see any logic on going for 50million$ tiger. how they will pay for it? PA can go for T129 for same price.

The Eurocopter Tiger (company designation EC 665) is an attack helicopter manufactured by Eurocopter. In Germany it is known as the Tiger; in France and Spain it is called the Tigre.

Design

A closeup of the UHT's possible armamentThe body of the Tiger is made from 80% carbon fiber reinforced polymer and kevlar, 11% aluminium, and 6% titanium. The rotors are made from fiber-plastic able to withstand combat damage and bird strikes. Protection against lightning and electromagnetic pulse is ensured by embedded copper/bronze grid and copper bonding foil.

While the Tiger has a conventional helicopter gunship configuration of the two crew sitting in tandem, it is somewhat unusual in that the pilot is in the front seat and the gunner is in the back, unlike all other current attack helicopters. The seats are offset to opposite sides of the centerline to improve the view forward for the gunner in the back.

Protection

The EC Tiger is capable of stopping 23mm autocannon fire.

Installed in the helicopter are a AN/AAR-60 MILDS System ensuring radar warning, a laser warning system, and a missile launch/approach detector developed by EADS DE, all connected to a central processing unit from Thales and a SAPHIR-M chaff/flare dispenser from MBDA. Its visual, radar, infrared, sound signatures have been minimized.

Navigation/Communications

The navigation system contains two Thales Avionique three-axis ring laser gyro units, two magnetometers, two air data computers, BAE Systems Canada CMA 2012 four-beam Doppler radar, radio altimeter, global positioning system, and a suite of low air speed sensors and sensors for terrain following.

Radios: HF, MF, VHF, UHF, military SATCOM, GPS receiver, and datalink..

Tiger HAP

The Tiger HAP/HCP (Helicoptere d'Appui Protection / Helicopter for Close Protection) is a medium-weight air-to-air combat and fire support helicopter built for the French Army.

It is fitted with a chin-mounted 30 mm gun turret and can carry 68 mm SNEB unguided rockets or 20 mm machine cannons for the fire support role as well as Mistral air-to-air missiles.

UH Tiger

The UHT (from Unterstützungshubschrauber Tiger; Ger. supporting helicopter Tiger) is a medium-weight multi-role fire support helicopter built for the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces).

The UHT can carry PARS 3 LR "fire and forget" and/or HOT3 anti-tank missiles as well as 70 mm Hydra air-to-ground fire support rockets. Four AIM-92 Stinger missiles (2 on each side) are mounted for air-to-air combat. Unlike the HAP/HCP version it has no integrated gun turret, but a 12.7 mm gunpod can be fitted if needed. The German Army decided against the French 30 mm GIAT cannon that is used on other Tiger versions because it was dissatisfied with the heavy recoil of this weapon. The upgrade of the UHT with the Rheinmetall RMK30, a 30 mm recoilless autocannon, is not yet clarified due to the budget.

Another noticeable difference with the HAP version is the use of a mast-mounted sight, which has a second-generation infrared channel and a TV channel.

Countermeasures include radar/laser/missile launch/missile approach warning receivers and decoy launchers.

Tiger ARH

The Tiger ARH (Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter) is the version ordered by the Australian Army to replace its OH-58 Kiowas and UH-1 Iroquois-based 'Bushranger' gunships. The Tiger ARH is a modified and upgraded version of the Tiger HAP with upgraded MTR390 engines as well as a laser designator incorporated in the Strix sight for the firing of Hellfire II air-to-ground missiles. Instead of SNEB unguided rockets, the ARH will operate 70 mm (2.75 in.) rockets from Belgian developer, Forges de Zeebruges (FZ). Most of helicopters will be operated by the 1st Aviation Regiment based at Robertson Barracks in Darwin.

Tiger HAD

The Tiger HAD (Hélicoptère d'Appui Destruction Support Destruction Helicopter) version is essentially identical to the HAP version, but with 14% more engine power available due to the upgraded Enhanced MTR390 engines (1464shp) and a better ballistic protection. It can also be equipped with the PARS 3 LR anti-tank missiles that were originally developed for the German UHT version.

The helicopter is suited for a support and fire suppression role and has been selected by the Spanish Army. The French Army Light Aviation (ALAT) decided to upgrade most of their HAP helicopters to the HAD-Variant and thus the former HAC Variant (i.e. Hélicoptère Anti-Char or Helicopter Anti-Tank) was cancelled.

By June 2006, 28 production Tigers were flying, including 18 aircraft delivered to their customers of 4 countries.[citation needed] These 28 aircraft had logged about 4000 flight hours together.

it's EXCELLENT news.....

silly question --- how do they compare with the upgraded Cobras? I know these are much newer and can fire a greater array of weapons (and better armour i would imagine)

My opinion about the deal is that its pretty good. Army requires air assets which can carry out precision ground attack as air support. French will also help us with nuclear energy -- probably in the longer term.

The French were probably upset about Pakistan opting for the U-214 German submarines (which are better anyways). They lost out on the Scorpene deal so it's good we were able to secure a good deal with them on something else. French do have a good defence industry, and we've done a lot of business with them in the past.

Its good news but hope American aid approved this sale payment. Otherwise Mr Zaradari is very famous for his articulate commissions. Surprise why no consider, any Russian which he can buy three in price of one. But anyway hope this good deal. Pakistan already familiar with French helos long before induction of US Cobra.

Apache vs. Havoc vs. Hokum vs. Tiger. Which is the most deadly? Attack helicopters are fast moving, low flying and lethal combat aircraft. They are high-speed forces capable of delivering a heavy punch against armored vehicles ?
while not having to worry about impassable terrain. But which is the best attack helicopter in the world?
Contenders for this come primarily from the United States (AH-64 Apache) and Russia (the Mi-28 Havoc and the Ka-50/52
Hokum), and the Eurocopter Tiger from France and Germany. These helicopters are all lethal ? they are capable of destroying anywhere form eight to 24 tanks in a single sortie ? anywhere from 25 to 80 percent of a standard Russian tank battalion (31 tanks). They also can carry unguided rockets (usually 2.75-inch or 3.15-inch) for use against soft targets like trucks or infantry. The Russians designed two top-rate attack helicopters. The Mi-28 Havoc is a direct
successor to the famous Mi-24 Hind. The Havoc carries up to 16 AT-6 ?Spiral? or 32 AT-9 ?Vikhr? anti-tank missiles, up to four 20-round 3.15-inch rocket pods, or a mixture. It also has a powerful 30mm cannon, which is also used on the BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle. It can hit targets as far as 4 kilometers away.
The Mi-28 has a top speed of 300 kilometers per hour, and a range of 460 kilometers.
The other Russian design is the Ka-50 Hokum. It also can
carry 24 ?Vikhr? missiles, four 20-round rocket pods, or a mixture. The Hokum also can carry the AA-11/R-73 Archer air-to-air missiles, which makes the Hokum a very capable threat against opposing attack helicopters. The 30mm 2A42 is also mounted on the Hokum, albeit more like a fighter?s cannon. The Hokum?s top speed
is 350 kilometers per hour, and it has a combat radius of 250
kilometers. The AH-64 Apache is slower that either of the Russian
helicopters (296 kilometers per hour), but features more range (520 kilometers).
It also only carries 16 Hellfire anti-tank missiles, 76 2.75-inch rockets, or a mixed load. It has a 30mm gun, but the M230 is not as powerful as the 2A42. That said, it holds more than twice as many rounds (1200) as the Ka-50?s mount (500), and nearly five times as many as the Mi-28?s (250). The Apache has been exported
to the UK, Israel, Greece, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and the Netherlands. It also has proven itself in Desert Storm, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Eurocopter has built the Tiger, which is a
versatile helicopter for both observation and attack duties. It carries eight anti-tank missiles (Trigat, HOT, TOW, or Hellfire). One version has a 30mm cannon with 450 rounds. It has a top speed of 322 kilometers per hour and a range of 800 kilometers. It is in service with France, Germany, Spain, and Australia.
Which is the best of these? Judging by performance
specifications, the Ka-50 is the best ? barely edging out the Tiger. That said, the AH-64 Apache, however, has a combat record in four conflicts, and unlike either Russian helicopter, it has secured a wide variety of export orders. Only the Tiger comes close, but it lacks the firepower and the combat record of the Apache. The Apache is probably the most proven design of these, and has the fewest question marks regarding its weapons or electronics.

Why go for the Tiger? We can wait for the WZ-10, and since China is our ally we won't have a delay or spare parts problem with them. also the the HJ-8 (Baktar Shikan) will be incorporated on the Helli so manufacture of the armaments will take place in Pakistan. We won't have to beg the EU for things like "Machine Gun Ammunition".

If we are able to secure the deal without kicks as we know who;s in the government these days, it would be a good riddance from the Cobras and US blackmailing.

i wont be surprised if later down the line we sign MoU/ToT with the French on providing local facility for producing the weapons fired by the Tiger.

Pakistan has a strong experience with the Mistral missile and its system, and this will be incorporated on the Tiger. I'm sure they will provide technology for us to produce these weapons at Air weapons complex.

Tiger and Apache are closely matched. Tiger has a better A2A capability with Mistral missiles but Apache has better armor and payload capability (and it is battle proven in so many conflicts).

Rooivalk, Cobra & Hokum are all much cheaper and still very capable choppers.

Tiger is the EU answer to the problem of heavy reliance on US arms.
