ISLAMABAD: Director of premier French think tank, the Institute for International and Strategic Affairs, Dr Pascal Boniface, said France should have a civil-nuclear accord with Pakistan on the pattern of the US-India nuclear deal.

The French expert made these remarks during a lecture on “France, Europe and changing global scenario” at the Pakistan-China Institute here on Sunday. The event was chaired by the Institute of Strategic Studies, Islamabad (ISSI) Chairperson Ambassador Masood Khan.

Boniface said Pakistan was a nuclear-armed nation of 200 million people and had a pivotal role to play in the strategically important part of the world.

He also criticised the Iraq war saying it was “destabilising for the Arab World”. Boniface welcomed the Iran nuclear deal terming it “a rare defeat for the powerful pro-Israel lobby in the United States”.

The lecture was attended by university professors and scholars of international relations, and diplomatic and security experts.

Senator Mushahid Hussain praised the French role in global affairs as well as the statesmanship of late President Charles de Gaulle.

The participants acknowledged that France was leading the world in civil nuclear energy technology for peaceful purposes.

- Did you see anywhere in my post where it even remotely felt like I was talking about France being better off working with India? Like Russia was and now they are selling MI's, SAMs and SU-35's to Pakistan? Does this example tells you how the world's changed? When your 60 years strong and the ONLY ally switch sides?

- Did you know that Indian lobby did their best to stop the F-16's block 52 and recently the AH-1Z's to Pakistan? Did you know that the US said eff off and they still sold them to Pakistan?

- Did you know WHY Modi is about to sign off on the Chinook and Apache deal??? ? Its because the US saw what happened to the French with respect to the Rafale deal and it quickly learned how to deal with India.

Instead of wasting ANYMORE time with India in the heli's, the suppliers told India that they are giving India a discounted price, after September 30th, the price will be increased b 30% . The result was a hot scramble of Modi, Mr. Duval and a few ministers, now the contract is ready and awaiting Modi's visit to the US. So I feel bad for the french, they needed to JUST raise the prices by like 40% with a timeline attached to it. Rafale's would've been sold at their original quantity like 2 years ago

- So at this point, everything is easy for India but its becoming the same case for Pakistan too. Cash was their main issue and its getting resolved by very quickly. Money talks and bullshiit walks. It certainly put a dent in Russia and India's 60 years of "alliance" if you want to call that. When the French, the Americans, the Russians, etc, can make say $ 5 billion from Pakistan and $ 15 from India......these are still BILLIONS of dollars. So in the eyes of a business, why lose one for the other. So its equally important to work with both, Indians and Pakistanis. Both have and will have plenty of monies due to their economic growth!!

I have no idea what are you trying to say? I never said that we don't want to sell to India. We'd LOVE to, come buy more and more and return a few billion that we gave you guys in the shape of millions of our jobs.

What I was talking about is the "Indian style" negotiations. You've screwed over the French and have pissed them off. SO bad that they told Modi that if there are no Rafales, no Scorpions either. Modi under an emergency said buy 36. Even that is crazy because the French were after 126. So buying 36 makes no sense looking at the number. But it makes sense as India salvaged the relationship.

Next, the US, you've been talking to us about Apache's and Chinooks and C-17's since 2009!!!!! And now looking at the French, the US realized that this is very Indian style. So to counter that, is to let you know, that hey man, we don't have forever to "keep talking". We are changing the price so if you want to buy it, you have 1 or 2 months and then the price goes up by 30%. That worked as 30% price rise would mean about a quarter to 300+ million I think. That's a LOT of money!! It's the Indian style negotiations that I was referring to. And I don't even want to talk about the Russians. They feel betrayed and back stabbed!!!!

Its just a think tank. I suppose there are more that a dozen think tanks on this forum itself. Who say 100's of things daily which makes iota of a difference to the real world.
Another point this think tank was speaking at the pakistani chinese institution. What do you expect him to say ? Declare pakistan a terrorist nation ? NO. He said what he is supposed to say.

So pakistanis hold your celebrations until anything official comes from france.
