The police opened an investigation on Thursday after vandals left swastikas and anti-Islam slogans on a mosque in northern France. The slogans, like "Islam out of Europe" and "neither Islam nor Burqas," along with swastikas and Celtic crosses, were found Wednesday on the wall of a partly constructed mosque in Hérouville-Saint-Clair, a suburb of Caen, Normandy.
The French immigration minister, Eric Besson, said the act "showed not only tremendous cowardice but also extreme stupidity." A prosecutor said the vandalism had taken place on Tuesday night, a few hours after the lower house of Parliament voted to approve a ban on the wearing of veils, such as burqas, that cover the face in public places.

Police have opened an investigation after vandals scrawled swastikas and xenophobic slogans on the construction site of a mosque in north-western France, prosecutors said Thursday.
Inscriptions reading "Islam get out of Europe", "No to Islam and to burkas", along with swastikas, were discovered on Wednesday in Herouville-Saint-Clair, a suburb of the city of Caen in Normandy.
The incident came a day after French lawmakers passed on first reading a bill banning women from wearing the full-face Islamic vail in public.
Immigration Minister Eric Besson called the vandalism "cowardly" and "foolish".
"I cannot begin to describe my indignation," the minister said. "France has always been, and will remain, a land of immigration and integration."
Similar incriptions were discovered in May at a hallal butchery in Lisieux, also in Normandy.
Several other mosques and Muslim cemeteries have been marked in recent months, the minister said in a statement.
