Former Taiwan president Lee Teng-hui is set to embark on a six-day visit to Japan Tuesday that will take him to Tokyo, Sendai and Japan's northern Fukushima prefecture, which was devastated by the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami, his office said Monday.
The 92-year-old Lee is scheduled to spend the first three days in Tokyo, where he will speak at the Diet Building Wednesday and attend a banquet hosted by the Friends of Lee Teng-hui Association in Japan.
He will also give a speech at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan Thursday before making an appearance at a banquet hosted by Japanese Diet members.
Lee will then visit a cancer hospital in Koriyama city, Fukushima prefecture Friday and stay in Sendai that night.
On Saturday, he will visit Zuiganji, a Zen temple in Matsushima, and then attend a banquet in Miyagi prefecture, which will be followed by a visit the next day to Millennium Hope Hills, a seaside park in Iwanuma city, Miyagi, where he will pay his respects to those who lost their lives in the 2011 disaster.
Lee, who served as Taiwan's president from January 1988 to May 2000, is scheduled to return home July 26. It will be his seventh visit to Japan since he left office. Lee last visited Japan in September 2014.
