Former PPP minister disqualified from polls
May 03, 2013 Our Staff Reporter
ISLAMABAD - The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday setting aside the Sindh High Court (SHC) verdict disqualified former Sindh Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah belonging to Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) from contesting upcoming election, as he failed to submit renunciation certificate to prove that he was no longer a Canadian citizen.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and comprising Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed heard the appeal against the SHC order. The returning officer and election tribunal had rejected the nomination papers of the PPP candidate for contesting polls from PS-73 Jamshoro-cum-Dadu-III.
It may be recalled that on April 18, three-judge SHC bench, comprising Justice Maqbool Bakar, Justice Abdul Rasool Memon and Justice Farooq Shah, had overruled the verdict of election tribunal and allowed him to run for the Sindh Assembly constituency.
