Former military dictator Musharraf handed death sentence in high treason case

In a first in Pakistan's history, a three-member bench of the special court in Islamabad on Tuesday handed former military ruler Pervez Musharraf death sentence in the long-drawn high treason case against him.

A detailed verdict — which is split 2-1 — will be issued in 48 hours.

The court declared Musharraf guilty of high treason. On November 3, 2007, Musharraf trampled the Constitution, the court said. The special court was formed on November 20,2013. On March 31, 2014, the court indicted Musharraf. On June 19, 2016, the court declared him to be a fugitive. The special court was reformed six times. {I've asked both if this is the written court order or whether it was announced in court}

The former military chief is currently in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The high treason trial of the former military dictator for imposing the state of emergency on Nov 3, 2007, had been pending since December 2013.

I don't understand this judgement. Musharraf brought in progressive ideas like "Enlightened Moderation" and spoke of peace with India. More than once, terrorists tried to kill him. Compare that to Nawaz Sharif who I suppose is seen favorably by TTP and the like.

What instead should be done is that Musharraf should align his party with PTI and he should be given a primary position like Foreign Minister.

The verdict is in line to his illegal matial law i guess. What you are saying is that just because some one donated 100 billion shouldn't be punished for rape he committed or any other crime.

Well, he was also the main instigator of the Kargil War but like South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission after the end of Apartheid, Musharraf too can be forgiven. Imposing Martial Law is a minor mistake compared to what Zia ul Haq did to Pakistan.

Also, it was Musharraf who had the courage to confront the mullahs and mullans of the Lal Masjid.

So, all in all, I believe he should be forgiven and brought back into public life.

Well, that's sad. He has the potential to still participate in the political affairs of his country but he has to forcibly exile himself in Dubai.

Hmm, not kill Nawaz but at least exile him to Saudia or Britain or some place like that.
