Foreign secretary Nirupama Rao arrived here today on a three-day visit for crucial talks ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's Bangladesh visit expected in the next couple of months.

Senior foreign ministry officials and Indian high commissioner in Dhaka Rajeet Mitter received Rao at the airport as she was set to hold talks with her Bangladeshi counterpart Mohamed Mijarul Quayes tomorrow.

"All aspects of bilateral relations as well as sub-regional issues will be discussed during the consultations," a foreign ministry statement said last night.

The visit, it said, would provide the two sides an opportunity to take stock of the progress in implementation of decisions taken during Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's New Delhi visit in January 2010.

It was also expected to discuss issues to further expand areas of bilateral, regional and sub-regional cooperation for the mutual benefits of the two countries.

Officials familiar with the process at foreign offices in Dhaka and New Delhi said Rao's visit was also expected to find ways to ensure some tangible outcome during the Indian prime minister's upcoming visit, on areas including water sharing on common rivers and cross-border frontiers issues.

They said the two sides were also expected to reach a tangible outcome to resolve cross-border enclave issues during Singh's visit along with other outstanding bilateral matters.

Rao will also call on Hasina and foreign minister Dipu Moni and meet the prime minister's foreign affairs adviser Gowher Rizvi and economic affairs adviser Mashiur Rahman during her stay here.
