Where did you get that stat from? The percentage of people who own guns in the US is around 30%.
Regardless of whether they could see themselves owning a gun in the future or if they know someone who does or live with someone who does.

See, I would have a problem with that. Why should I give up mine? The problem is way too complicated to just say "take them all away" and the first thing that needs to start is to raise the age of being able to legally purchase a gun to 21. Then if they want to pass a vote as to whether one needs to go through several levels of "competence" tests and maybe make it 25 before being able to own a semi, people might even lend an ear to that. But even that would be extremely tough to pass. Making ownership age the same as drinking age is definitely the first thing to start out with.
I could never understand the open-carry concept TBH. Even as an avid gun guy, I see absolutely no need to walk the streets carrying my AR-15 or AK-47. Nothing wrong with going to the range and wasting 1000 rounds on various targets, or get out on legal land and set up all sorts of fun targets to shoot at and get our thrill that way. But to sling a copy of an M4 on my shoulder and walk the streets of downtown? Where is the fun in that unless you're a glutton for cop attention because I guarantee you someone is going to call the cops, they're going to show up and they're gonna be very apprehensive of you where you might get cuffed and maybe even shot on top of that. So the appeal of open carry or even corneal carry is totally unattractive for this guy.
