Normal people can click the mouse and type on the keyboard with their hands, but how can the people with upper limb disabilities click the mouse and surf the Internet? Recently, several university students from the Nanjing University of Science and Technology came up with an idea to invent a device where people can control a mouse with their feet. They have called the mouse "Talang."

The "Talang" mouse looks like a large slipper with a blue waves design. According to the students that invented it, wearing the "slipper," people can click the left mouse button by pressing the slipper with their forefoot, click the right button by pressing the slipper with their heel and browse the websites by moving their foot.

Li Yunlong, a student at the Instrument Science and Technology department of the School of Mechanical Engineering under the Nanjing University of Science and Technology, is the head of the invention team. He said that through constant research, amendment and discussion, the five members in their team had looked for a variety of information on the Internet and finally determined the design program of the "Talang" mouse in early April 2010. Then, they began to design circuits, make PCB and debug programs.

According to sources, the "Talang" mouse has won the first prize in the MEMS Sensor Application qualifying competition held in Jiangsu and Anhui provinces in China for the Fourth MEMSIC Cup and is about to compete for the championship in the national finals.

This could make life for the disabled people far easier. I wonder if they are planning on designing key boards as well.

and what about people with no foot and hands :lol:

Voice recognition systems
Another way to use the computer without hands is with a voice recognition system. These systems are very advanced and work with a very high accuracy rate. After some initial voice and intonation training, when the program gets used to the users voice and speaking habits, the accuracy can be more than 99 percent. Users can either dictate text to the computer, or switch to a command mode, where they can give instructions to the computer, such as starting e-mail, selecting a line of text, etc. This way when applications are designed to be accessible, the computer can be used totally hands free. Voice recognition systems are much more difficult, or impossible to use for those who have a more severe speech impairment. Read more about voice recognition systems.

When voice recognition systems are not an option, people can use different kinds of switches to interact with their computer. These switches are individually customized in many cases, to make use of any movement a person is able to carry out. Some people are only able to hold an object in their mouth, nod their head, or blow into a tube. Switches help navigating the operating system and applications. A switch for example, allows the user to navigate on the screen, and select letters from an on-screen keyboard. Very often they are used together with an auto complete feature which guesses the word the user wants to type in order to decrease the amount of time typing takes. Still, using switches can be very slow, though great efficiency can be achieved with practice.
