how much of this is really representing majority? there are bad eggs everywhere.

Here we had a huge issue with curry powder many years ago - there were spice mix - sudan red was put it - source was spice mixture imported from india.

Sudan Red - the illegal chemical food dye - just won't go away. A further 107 food products have tested positive for containing low levels of the prohibited dye.

The latest list of products ranges from Suikerklontjie Skiet Skop Donner to Bibi's Tasty Masala & Spices. It was released by the health department on Thursday.


The total number of products tested positive for the prohibited colourant now stands at 128 since the department embarked on a clean-up campaign against the carcinogenic dye three months ago.

"A great number of the 21 previously identified products have since been removed from circulation," said health department spokesperson Solly Mabotha.

"The list has been forwarded to the provincial authorities, who have been instructed to alert their local authorities so that they can ensure that these products are no longer sold."


The department is calling on retailers who have any of these products in stock to remove them from the shelves.

"Consumers should also check their cupboards and dispose of the products immediately," Mabotha said.

Sudan Red is a potentially cancer-causing chemical dye, prohibited for use in South Africa by the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectant Act 54 of 1972.


Although the Sudan Red dye contains chemicals that could increase the risk of cancer, there is no immediate risk to exposed consumers, because the levels of the contaminant found so far have been very low. The risk occurs when the substance is taken in large quantities over a prolonged period of time.

Meanwhile, some products found to contain the dye have returned to store shelves.

"Certain suppliers claim they are now producing clean batches of specific products.


"Consumers are advised to be vigilant by ensuring that all previously implicated products have 'Sudan Red Free' stickers or that there are notices (to this effect) on the shelves before they buy the product," Mabotha said.

He added that the campaign to collect samples and the testing of foodstuffs for Sudan Red dye was continuing.

When I was in Pakistan couple of years ago...I saw no such thing....then again, this is a Indian video and this scam I think originated in China, unless someone can correct me on that.

So barely visible in Pakistan? Again...unless someone living in Pakistan currently can correct me on this.
