Turkish firm to market Nimr military vehicles

Haseeb Haider / 16 May 2013

Nimr Automotive, a part of Tawazun Group, has signed an agreement with a Turkish firm to market, and possibly produce armoured vehicles in Turkey.

The Abu Dhabi-based firm, which is known for manufacturing military vehicles, has signed a cooperation agreement with FNSS Savunma Sistemleri, a leading manufacturer and supplier of armoured combat vehicles and weapon systems for the Turkish Armed Forces and Allied Armed Forces.

The agreement will allow the two companies to work together to set up a project, which will pave the way for FNSS to market, sell and possibly produce Nimr vehicles in Turkey for the Turkish market.

The agreement was signed last week on the sideline of the 11th International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF 2013) in Istanbul by Nimr Automotive general manager Mohamed Musabah Al Mazrouei and general manager and chief executive of FNSS Defence Systems Kadir Nail Kurt.

Saif Mohamed Al Hajeri, chief executive officer of Tawazun, Murad Bayar, Undersecretary of Defence Industries at the Turkish Defence Ministry, and a number of high ranking UAE and Turkish officials were also present on the occasion.

After the signing ceremony, Al Hajeri said his company will be working with FNSS on identifying new business opportunities and joint development and production programs in both the UAE and Turkey. He said the agreement will certainly help cement “our long-standing and fruitful cooperation with the leading defence manufacturing companies in Turkey.”

Mohamed Al Mazrouei described the agreement as “culmination of the long standing cooperation between the UAE and Turkey.”

“The agreement provides a solid basis for a long-term cooperation and exchange of expertise between Nimr and FNSS and allows them to complement each other’s capabilities and resources in the fields of military vehicles manufacturing,” he added.

Tawazun is a strategic investment firm focused on the long-term development of UAE’s industrial manufacturing and technology capabilities and knowledge-transfer with a specific focus on the defence sector.

Established in 2007 by Tawazun Economic Council, Tawazun’s mission is to develop profitable ventures through industrial partnerships and strategic investments that add to the country’s industrial manufacturing layer in the areas of defence, defence manufacturing and manufacturing technology.

Home - NIMR

For the Turkish market?
Some one explain that to me please.

Basicly license production.

No offence but, we have got a sh!tload of our own already (Cobra, Kale, Ejder, Ural and etc.) This wont even stand a chance.

joint development and production programs in both the UAE and Turkey

I'm more interested in this sentence. I think FNSS is collaborating with Tawazun in order to compete against Otokar. In IDEF-2013, Otokar showed that they are in a whole different level than FNSS.

Recently one of the Koç family's members stated that they are very interested in defence sector and considering it as one of their five major sectors.

‘Savunma’ya Koç damgasý - Hürriyet EKONOMÝ

I have come to think that why is Sabancı waiting for, they could buy BMC and enter the sector at a great advantage.

Pls look first of the Evolution of the 1st Pars to AV-8.

Maybe same here for NIMR :)

Ain't none of you see what's happening? :D Otokar stepped into FNSS' territory by making Tulpar. If the army chooses Tulpar FNSS won't be selling ACV300 series anymore :) so FNSS intends to take over light armored tactical vehicle business.

They've nothing comparable with Cobra, by this way they'll have a new product without allocating any budget to R&D, an immediate result :) oh boy this rivalry is getting fierce :D

Till 2015 FNSS has Time to Present new Products.

We know that Otokar has worked on Tulpar over 5 Years.

And :

FNSS

Wait for the Future.

With Korkut FNSS only do what SSM has want.

They have done their Job.

As Legionnaire stated out Otokar stepped into FNSS territory with an ambitious product conspiciously that Design of Tulpar shocked everybody including western public. Wheeled vehicle sector is already Otokar's main interest area and Capabilities of Otokar engineers are far ahead of not only FNSS but also many other leading Western institutes in wheeled sector but FNSS was known as tracked vehicle king along with new 6x6 and 8x8 Pars vehicle family. FNSS can't realized one thing. Otokar improved tracked vehicle R&D capabilities thanks to hundreds of design engineers working for Altay MBT program and At first attempt, Otokar's Tulpar suddenly changed all calculations. At this situation, It is for sure that FNSS can't compete with Otokar neither wheeled, nor tracked armoured vehicle sector in short term.

Even If FNSS start development of a superior tracked vehicle as competitor of Tulpar, The time to be spent on development schedule, will be a huge loss for FNSS and costs too much for them because During the time FNSS develop a new vehicle, Otokar will have already captured lots of markets thanks to beauty and capabilities of Tulpar.

As a result, FNSS is desperately trying to step into wheeled light vehicle sector. Otokar's success hidden into FNSS's lazy development schedule regarding tracked vehicles. FNSS supposed himself a monopol for tracked vehicles in Turkey and didn't develop any serious capabilities since 1996 but prefer putting their noses into Otokar's expertise areas with comprehensive R&D over Pars family since 2000's. They have a costumer like TSK which ordered thousands of ACV-300 in 90's so They just sit on their lazy arses to count the money given for ACV-300. When they realized that They can not reach more $$$$ with ACV-300 series tracked vehicles at home, They suddenly changed direction to beat Otokar with their Pars vehicles in Turkey's wheeled vehicle tender but Otokar punished FNSS so bad that FNSS will never forget it.

Pay attention to Otokar's all statements. They are directly targetting FNSS with their speeches. They always emphasize Otokar as Turkey's sole national institute which is leading sector..

I bet Whenever Nail Kurt who claimed that FNSS will develop a light tank which will beat KMW PUMA in tenders, are tearing own hairs whenever He looks at Tulpar design. Lying to Turkish people before SSM was thinking over funding FNSS program with public money or not, costs too much for institutes. (If the scenario was What I though) Some other factors may also be occupied the agenda We don't know, under thet table as well )

Pay attention, This image taken during reportage made by DefenceTurkey in IDEF 2013. Look How serious and angry Nail Kurt is...

After all they may have to make that light tank with their own damn resources. But seriously man, it's doubtful if they can compete with Hema with this Nimr thing :D Cobra series are combat proven vehicles, used in the armed forces for a long time. I don't see FNSS replacing them anytime soon.

They just added another product to their portfolio, It's possible if they can do some marketing with their South East Asian contacts but it seems like it'll take a while If they can beat Otokar at home :)

I think the most of the credit goes to SSM for their balance policy that kept all the players in game so far. That we have so many companies producing land vehicles in Turkey.

Otokar:

Cobra-1,2
Kaya-1,2
Kale
Tulpar
Ural
Altay
Varous type of turrets

Only Allah knows What they are developing background at present. Maybe cargo trucks to replace BMC 2,5, 5 and 10 tonnes trucks in Turkish Army...

RMK:

SAR vessels
6 Milgem-S contact
Domestic LHD design

After this period, In short term, Beating Otokar in home is just a pipedream for not only FNSS, but also Nurol, Hema and others. This result is seen at Nail Kurt's face clearly.

SSM didn't convince Koc Otosan to join into national powerpack project. If Otosan joined into tender, Everything would be much easier than current.

Lets wait for the Future ,i mean TULPAR can only carry a A400M and Turkey has not One actually.

With the First Altay Tank who will enter the Service we will see which IFV will take the Role of the AKINCI.

Otokar Tulpar will never fully replace the ACV series. The ACV series was ment as a cost-effective solution for both IVF and APC demand, Tulpar on the other hand is the latests western orientated costly (Assuming) IFV.

Me think our inventory will be like this.
Tracked IFV: Otokar Tulpar (Replaces oldest ACV-300 IFV)
Tracked APC: ACV-15 Akinci or derative (Replaces M113)

Of fvcking course not. ACV series will be used in Turkish armed forces probably until 2040s. Tulpar's in a different league, it can carry heavier armament.

I think Tulpar will be bought at some point and it'll replace AKINCI IFV. ACV series will be used to transport troops but they won't remain in the fight much longer than necessary.
