Here is a picture I took of a fallen street lamp on my university. Fortunately, the Tallahassee area did not get hit nearly as badly as other places.

Some of the damage is absolutely horrific, and a lot of people have lost everything. This is very unfortunate, and I am praying everyone affected recovers.

All the houses here are concrete and built to withstand hurricanes. If a hurricane came to Karachi, the destruction will be incomprehensible.

Hard to give an exact amount, but definitely in the billions. The tourist infrastructure of those areas have been destroyed, which will hurt them financially for years. As for human casualties, so far 18 have died. However, that number is set to increase. Currently, rescue teams are still looking for survivors in the rubble.

All the houses here are concrete and built to withstand hurricanes. If a hurricane came to Karachi, the destruction will be incomprehensible.

From what I understand, building codes were updated after hurricane Andrew in 1992. However, even buildings up to code such as the hotels and condos got destroyed or severely damaged by the winds and surge. It looks like the codes are suitable for inland Florida, which does not receive the surge or winds as strong. Obviously, the structures worst hit were mobile homes and older buildings.

BTW, how was Irma for you? I heard Orange County was hit pretty badly.

And I agree, given how much damage and lives lost in Karachi and Mumbai due to monsoons, those cities would get absolutely destroyed by a cat 5.

Concrete is strong while wood has beauty

Wood doesn't conduct heat well so homes built with it are cheaper to heat/cool. As an example put a piece of cement and a piece of wood in the hot sun and which one would you rather step on with bare feet? Conversely put the same in 0 degree and which would you want to step on? Wood doesn’t transfer/radiate temperature easily.
