In the largest-ever investment in an online Indian company, Japanese telecom and internet giant SoftBank has put around $2.5 billion into e-commerce major Flipkart.

The fresh capital extends the size of Flipkart's financing round, which was announced this April, to $4 billion, boosting its firepower in its battle with Amazon in the online retail market. Flipkart will now be valued at $14.2 billion, sources said.

The fund raise eclipses the highs set by Flipkart and Paytm when they both raised $1.4 billion earlier this year. The Flipkart investment comes after SoftBank's failed attempt to merge its portfolio company and Snapdeal with Flipkart.

Snapdeal should have agreed for a merger with Flipkart. Now Snapdeal is dead. Now the competition is between Flipkart and Amazon.

Flipkart needs to level up its game. Amazon is doing great with aggressive pricing and top notch customer service.

If Flipkart wants to make money, it needs to fight Amazon in USA. Its the dollar money that counts and online marketplaces here charge money for shipping and rarely the product is discounted. But the delivery time here sucks.

If Flipkart can fight in US with better delivery times, it will have a huge crest of money to fight Amazon in India.

To be honest, everything Amazon offers is just an copycat of Flipkart. Trust me Amazon US/Canada dont offer even 25% of the services Amazon offers in India. They copy Flipkart initiatives, and with money try to make it better.
