Russia's top weapon producers have suspended the sale of the S-300 missile system to Syria, Russian daily Vedomosti has reported.

Russia’s Almaz-Antey was reportedly scheduled to deliver the system to Syrian sources between 2012 and 2013 but the expected sale was halted on government orders, according to the report.

Vedomosti said it accessed information provided by sources within the military industry.

Damascus' economic troubles could be one of the reasons behind the halt, the report said.

Russia has been struggling to end rumors that it is providing weapons for the Syrian government to quell the country’s long-running uprising.

Syria would have a ball if they would have got the S300's

.
There goes our green light. They've been idiots they have an army of old soviet junks with no public support and incompetent leadership. They shot down a military plane shot at another now they raised a PKK flag on border. Assad is trying to provoke us it's clear. And Russia will not stand behind his foolishness.

We should wait and see if this gets confirmed in the Russian media.

Russia halts plans to supply S-300 missile system to Syria – reports

Published: 27 June, 2012, 02:17

Russia’s main weapons producer has allegedly suspended its contract with Syria to supply S-300 long-range missile systems. Russia’s ‘Vedomosti’ daily published the report, citing unnamed sources within the military-industrial complex.

The very fact of the contract’s existence was not known until it was revealed in an annual report made only last week and published online by the makers of the S-300 systems, Almaz-Antey.

The report states that the company’s largest contracts are with Algeria (which is paying $39 million for a long-range missile defense system), and Syria, which signed a contract for the same system for $105 million.

The report also says that deliveries on the Syrian contract are expected to be made between 2012 and 2013. But ‘Vedomosti’ claims two separate sources, who chose to remain anonymous, have said deliveries have been put on the back-burner “after a direct order from above.”

It’s unclear whether these reports are true, but many are already speculating on the potential reasons for such a step. Some have suggested that Moscow has decided to placate Washington and Tel Aviv, drawing parallels between this situation and the one back in 2010, when Russia cancelled its contract for the same missile system with Iran.

However, the circumstances in 2010 were rather different. If Russia had fulfilled its contractual obligations back then, it would have been violating an international embargo. But no such embargo currently affects contracts between Russia and Syria.

Others have suggested that Damascus may be strapped for cash, and simply cannot afford the S-300 complex. This claim is also open to speculation as military cooperation between the two states is basically founded on the fact that Russia forgave Syria its $10 billion debt in return for future arms contracts.

No officials have yet commented on the matter, so it will be some time before light is shed on the situation. But President Vladimir Putin had previously said the arms that Russia delivers cannot be used in civil conflicts, and Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, stated the supplies were merely defensive weapons sold in contracts signed long ago.

“We are sending no battleships to Syria. We have been saying publicly that we have been implementing contracts under which we have to supply arms to Syria. These armaments are entirely defensive and they mostly consist of air defense systems, which cannot be used against the population and can only be used to respond to outside aggression,” Lavrov told RT.

Unless Syria get QR SAMs , they are at risk as the first 3 waves of CMs can take over Syrian air defenses .

Perhaps it is the impact of Putin's visit to Israel. The man has been planning to shore up ties with Israel and vice-versa for quite sometime. While on the surface, Russia-Israel ties may seem rocky, they have a tendency to consider each other as more dependable when it comes to the middle East affair.

Before any member gets started about US-Israeli ties being affected, I'd add that there are margins of intensity of any relations in international affairs when shoring up ties with other countries who are rivals to existing allies. That process is clearly being applied here. Let's prove this by a simple equation:

Iran's support + Russia's VETO = Assad regime's survival= Syria's continued relative stability

However,

Iran + Assad= trouble for Israel

since, Iran x Israel

Which means that Israel wants Russia to utilize its somewhat relative influence in Syria to control anti-Israeli elements from formenting in Syrian territory.

Although personally, I'd say that Assad's continued existence in Syrian regime is better off for the entire region as Islamists coming to power means further radicalization of a historically liberal and sane minded country.

. . .
Obama already scratched the bears belly on his visit.

Iran + Assad= trouble for Israel

Just wanting to say that a Shia empire never will cause a danger for Israel because of the fact that Shiism is a jewish work. This is nothing but manipulating people. The real target are the sunni muslims. Dont think these nuke works of Iran is agains Israel. Nope, the mission is to destroy the sunni's.

There is a limit of foreign support any government would entail. Assad has gone crazy and crossed all lines of sanity!

+ I dont know why Russia feels threaten by west. I mean, what kind of benefits does Russia has in Syria? Oil? I dont think so. The west would never try to invade Russia. So far i know does Russia nothing has (sources or other minerals). So Rusisa just must back off and dont bring their relations with Turkey iin to danger by a guy that slaughter his own people.

+ I dont know why Russia feels threaten by west.

Because they are not stupid enough to believe that west has given up her plans to break Russia just because Obama has been showing a relatively positive image to them.

what kind of benefits does Russia has in Syria?

Not because they love them or they are more valuable to them. They need to distract west's attention to recreate their union out of Russia. (Nowadays they call it "Eurasian Union") So, they are absolutely determined to play every card including Iran and Syria to the final. If they fail to create their union, they will disintegrate eventually as Putin said.
