If Rafale was the one along with Gripen NG to pass the Leh trial (I am not sure)..then we should go for Rafale..undoubtedly.

I will only like Gripen for one thing, with same $10-11 billion we can buy much more jets than just 126 considering its low price, who knows we can just create additional squadrons to teh already depleting ones.....

Okay, i am not going with the most popular choice here. My choice is the F 18. It's the only aircraft among the contenders (I'm not considering the F16 at all - no future) that has a proven AESA radar and will definitely be cheaper than the Rafale. Anyone seeing the cost of M2k upgradation package will realise that buying French is costly. Unlike the F 18 which is manufactured by Boeing who will have to do business with India over other military aircraft & civilian aircraft, the leverage India has over the French to keep costs of spare parts low is almost non existent. These aircrafts are going to be in our inventory for the next 30 - 40 years. We cannot afford to be reliant on a partner who has nothing else to offer and who may have only two or three air forces operating their aircraft. Their costs will be high and it is we who will be paying them.

I also think that the Gripen is a fantastic aircraft and from all reports thus far, that is a view shared by the IAF. A mixture of F-18's & the Gripen NG would, in my view be the best choice for us more so since they both share the same engine- F 414 which could also then be selected for the LCA assuring commonality and lower costs due to the numbers being ordered.

I say if gripen is trustworthy take it.............it is cheap too.

i did not understand cheap....all aircrafts have a target of 10 bill...thats the contract.... we are gonna get 15 in fly away condidtion and rest are gonna be build in india by hal...if we were outh to by all of em in fly away condidtion then it woulf have been expensive ....the typhoon is about 1 bill a peice ..so dose it mean to purchace 126 of em indian is gonna spend 126 bill...no sir!!! which ever is selected its goona be build in india with tot ....

There are a lot of graphics in the net showing the Gripen, or the Gripen NG with numbers of multi pylons and numbers of missiles and bombs on it, but did anybody saw a real pic of these fighters with such multi pylons? Without them things will look pretty different or?

1 x centerline fuel tank
1 x targeting pod
2 x 500Kg LGB
2 x 250Kg LGB
2 x WVR missiles

With the limitation to just one centerline fuel tank, that won't offer much range, the LCA could carry the same load!

The Gripen NG will have only the advantage of 2 heavy weight centerline pylons, which means it can carry 2 fuel tanks for more range, or 2 heavier bombs and the same wingload like the pics shows.
Compared to the other MMRCAs it is of course the cost-effective solution, but if we compare it with LCA, it is nearly twice as expensive.

Regarding which other fighter could have passed the trials in Leh. If the Gripen NG passed, it would be logical to assume that the F18SH with the same engine should pass too.
However, the reports only said that there were problems that needed modifications, but not a single report has said that one fighter wasn't able to do the trials. That's why I think it's mainly a media hype and not really a big deal for IAF.

I mean sometimes all indians think EF is best.Some times F-18.Now everybody thinks Rafale is best and some also think Gripen is best.

I say get EF.Its much better than rafale in RCS and engines.And if failed high altitude test does it matter simply base the squadrons in Rajasthan or Punjab.

A couple of things to think about dear members.
The gripen is currently one of the most advanced fighters in the world.
The package is extremely attractive as the Swedes are desperate and ready to offer a lot for small money.
The gripen currently has the best data link available in any aircraft making it a deadly opponent.
The price of running a gripen is extremely low compared to french jet infamous for their expensive parts. I.e Taiwan recently pulled out their mirage 2000 as they found out they were approx 5 times more expensive than their F16 to operate.
The gripen is modular hence you decide how it's going to look like

Thats not true - Upgrade package involves Significant Weapons .
MICA is costly weapon so is ASRAAM , A2G weapon of France is also costly.
and importantly upgrade have many spin-offs from Rafale like the ICMS-3 and navigation + Targeting equipment .

Mig29 upgrade is costing 20mill a piece and now compare it to Mirage's 40 mill whiach also involves weapons and New Gen avionics from Rafale.

And all people who think Gripen is Cheap - thats day-dreaming nothing else ,
Gripen's price is 70 or more per piece , check the Brazil's quote without spares and with spares . On top of that we are asking for full TOT.
But even at 70 mill is a good investment bcoz it pays off in long run due to Low operational cost .
Thats what counts in War , if a fighter can take off short distance and Hot-refuel + has low maintenance + low operational costs . I would love to see that Fighter simply bcoz even in Torn-off bomb hit airfield , my small fighter can take off and in one minute , I can launch that many more in nos.
