Five-time world heavyweight boxing champion Holyfield will train boxers in India
Five-time world heavyweight boxer Evander Holyfield will train Indian boxers as he has signed a 20-year deal with Sanghvi Brands.
Starting April next year, Holyfield will visit India twice or thrice every year to monitor the workout schedules and train the boxers in the Evander Holyfield fitness chain.
As per the norms of this deal, Evander will train the boxers through video-conferencing if incase he fails to make it. Also, in his absence, Holyfield-trained staff will oversee the workout regime of boxers.
The Sanghvi Group which is primarily a real estate company is planning to open at least 12 Holyfield fitness centres across India. Out of these, four of the biggest centres with an area of around 20,000 square feet, will be located in Delhi (1), Mumbai (2) and Bangalore (2).
These four centres will be equipped with a spa and other facilities apart from the boxing ring. Another six centres, with an area of around 4,000 square feet, will have similar mix of boxing and holistic fitness solutions.
Apart from this, the company is also going to set up four boxing academies in the later part of next year, whose chief coach will be Holyfield.
The four boxing academies will mostly be constructed in northern India, including Ludhiana and Chandigarh, considering that a number of boxing champions like Vijender Singh and Akhil Kumar have emerged from there.
The annual revenue for the Holyfield fitness chain is expected to be around Rs 60 to 75 crores during the next three years.
"It took me approximately 15 months to seal the deal with Evander. And it's great that it happened now since Indian boxing is on the upswing," Darpan Sanghvi, MD of Sanghvi Brands was quoted saying in the 'Times of India' newspaper.
"How many can claim to have been trained by a world champ? How many can claim to have worked out in a gym designed by one of the greatest boxers of our time? The man (Holyfield) is still fighting and is in top shape at 47.
"I couldn't think of a better boxer than Evander as our brand ambassador when I decided on the project. Hopefully, this chain will be a tipping point for Indian boxing, in helping it make it to the next stage."
Sanghvi also said that Holyfield wouldn't have taken up this project had it been just a premiuim product. "When he learned about the project, he wanted to know what's in it for the boxers from the underprivileged background.
"He is extremely enthusiastic about transferring his knowledge and mentor the Indian boxers." said Sanghvi.
