KARACHI: The first woman to head a major commercial bank in Pakistan was named Monday, a landmark move in a country where the economy is growing but the glass ceiling holds firm.

Sima Kamil, currently a deputy CEO at the country´s third-largest lender United Bank Limited (UBL), will take charge on June 1, its directors said in a statement.

"She is of course is the first chief of any commercial bank, and it is a huge step forward in the banking and corporate sectors of Pakistan," Muneer Kamal, the chairman of Pakistan´s Stock Exchange, told AFP.

He described Kamil as a "solid professional".

Women in Pakistan have fought for decades to secure rights for themselves, in a country where so-called honour killings and acid attacks remain commonplace.

They face routine discrimination in the workplace as well as harassment in public, and few women have headed any high-profile firms in the country.

Kamal cited Shazia Syed as another female pioneer after she was last year made head in Pakistan of Unilever, a Dutch-British multinational.

"Things are transforming in Pakistan now, the world must know that," he said.

UBL, headquartered in the financial hub Karachi, employs 15,000 people and has branches in 15 other countries, including the US, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

United Bank Limited (UBL), one of the country's largest banks, announced Monday that it had appointed Sima Kamil as the new president and chief executive officer (CEO) of the bank, to replace outgoing CEO Wajahat Hussain.

Kamil, who will initially serve as deputy CEO at UBL, is slated to take over the top slot after May 31, when Hussain departs from the company.

Kamil had previously been leading Habib Bank Ltd's (HBL) Branch Banking since 2011 and oversaw a large expansion of HBL's branch network.

She dealt with HBL's retail, consumer, small and medium enterprises, and rural banking initiatives, as well as the bank's wealth management division as head of the HBL Asset Management Company Ltd.

More recently, she lead the development and launch of HBL’s Women’s Market Program in an effort to promote HBL as the leading bank for women in Pakistan.

She had previously been associated with the microfinance industry as a director of the First MicroFinance Bank.

She also has experience at international financial institutions, including American Express, a financial services company, and Standard Chartered Bank.

Kamil has a business degree from Kingston University in the UK and an MBA from the City University, London.

She chairs the Board of Governors of the Karachi Grammar School, and is a board member of the Notre Dame Institute of Education.

According to UBL's website, the bank controls assets of more than Rs1 trillion.

It operates 1,281 branches all over Pakistan, including 22 Islamic banking branches and 1 branch in Karachi export processing zone, and 18 branches outside Pakistan.

More power to our women!!!!!! Our pride and honour. Keep up the great work.

Good luck Pakistan...May this be just a start :)

It's actually far from just a start. Though there are social barriers in parts of the country Pakistan is home to many women small business owners, major fashion brand designers, heads of civil society, heads of hospitals, MPAs, MNAs etc. They have a very prevalent role in our society though there's always room for improvement and for gender equality especially in areas where literacy rate and education are low.

Sima Kamil is a CEO of a major Pakistan bank,Maybe First women bank Ltd isn't a major bank in Pakistan.

They should have said first female CEO of a big 5 group bank not major bank.
