Built in Gujarat, Navy’s survey vessel sets sail for Mumbai - Indian Express


RAJKOT: The first Catamaran Hydrographic Survey Vessel, constructed by Alcock Ashdown Ltd (AAGL), the flagship ship-building company of the state government, set sail for Mumbai from Ghogha in Bhavnagar district on Wednesday. The ship is sailing to Mumbai for final drydocking and finishing work followed by sea trials leading to the delivery of the vessel. The AAGL is building six same vessels for the Navy. These vessels are intended to undertake coastal hydrographic survey of ports, their approaches and limited oceanographic survey. The cost of each vessel is Rs 109.89 crore. On delivery, the AAGL will be the first Indian shipyard, except Ministry of Defence and Modders of Steel shipyards, to deliver ships to the Indian Navy.

I dont understand it was just built, already it has developed rust stains on the sides of the ship?

Actually rust is common when ships are being built....
Before delivery the ship is treated i think..

Anyways if u read the report, it mentions the ship is on the way for sea trials and finishing work...

The ship looks pretty cool, wonder if the navy is gonna go for a similar design and try out littoral ships of this design.

Or maybe the coastguard should try the design out.

Cool looking ship. Hydrographic surveys have always been an area where the IN has thrived and surpassed all in the region.

+ from what I've heard the ship hasn't been fully inducted into the IN yet and I'm sure it will be cleaned up before induction. If we look at the rest of the IN fleet we can see the IN keeps all its vessels pristine- inside and out and runs a tight ship (lol, puns!) in this regard.

Very impressive that Indian shipyards have designed and built such a vessel in-house. Heralds great things for the future. As mentioned this is he first catermaran the IN has got so if they are happy with it then we may see a wider application of such a design.

Cool. The ship looks modern. Good to see an Indian company (Gujarat govt company Alcock Ashdown Limited) built the ship. They just need to repaint the ship.

INS Makar

INS Makar is first of those six vessels ordered. 500 tonne capacity vessel Makar is 53 meter long, 16 meter wide. It can work even in lower draft of 2.2 meter. 150 kw capacity computerized touch screen control pane, radar system, special system for emergency operation, electric control panel, AC plant, state-of-the-art survey equipments, powerful engine room, officers recreation area, VHF-VLF are some other features of this vessel.

I hope to see Navy come up with slightly larger and modified one with SRSAM and Prahaar onboard. :smokin:



Displacement: 800-1000 ton
Radar: New medium size AESA developed by DRDO or Revathi
SAM: SRSAM or Barak-1
CIWS: two AK-630M1
Main gun: one Otobreda 76 mm
Missile: 12 Prahaar missiles
Torpedo: TAL
Chopper: one Naval Dhruv


We can built 20 ships like this, which will be very useful against smaller navies specially in case of two front war. While our bigger ships focus on PLAN, these ships can deter PN.

Yup good move......I hope we use the same engines as the Shincese (I forget the name) but it would make the ship quite fast...this ship looks like it is built more for stability than for speed even thought it is catamaran design

Yeah but I think top speed is 18 knots which can be increased to 30 or so. As I said IN needs such smaller ships with Prahaar but also needs some design changes.
