Country's first-ever electric prepaid metre-manufacturing plant in Khulna goes into production in the second week of July.

The plant is aimed at fulfilling the huge demand for prepaid metres and thus save foreign currency.

The authorities concerned have completed the necessary preparations for starting the production in the plant, said Abdul Motalen, secretary of West Zone Power Distribution Company (WZPDCL).

Official sources said the state-owned WZPDCL and Hexing Electrical Company Ltd of China formed a joint venture company, 'Bangladesh Smart Electrical Company Limited', with the Bangladeshi firm having 51 per cent stake while the remaining 49 per cent going to the Chinese company.

A joint venture contract was signed between the two companies to produce prepaid metres.

On September 2, 2018, the company got the approval from the government involving Tk 280 million.

At first, the company will start its operation at Mohammadnagar in Khulna city while the WZPDCL will set up its permanent factory at Sheikhpara in the city.

The WZPDCL is providing services to 11,53,849 customers in 21 south-western districts and 20 upazila headquarters.

As part of WZPDCL's decision to bring its all customers under prepaid metre service, they have set a target to provide power services under prepaid metres to 1.46 million customers.

Already, a total of 1,54,864 prepaid metres have been installed while the rest 13,13,136 will be installed by 2023.

To implement the Sustainable Development Project of the government, the government has taken a plan to replace 7.50 million electromechanical or digital energy metres with prepaid metres across the country.

As per the plan, the authorities concerned have set a target to install a total of 2,87,00,000 prepaid metres in 2020-2021 fiscal year and some 16,07,584 have been installed under the project.

The remaining ones will be installed in phases.

Currently, the government has to import prepaid metres from abroad.

Once the plant goes into operation, it will help save huge amount of foreign currency.

Abdul Motalib, secretary of the WZPDCL, said the prepaid metres to be manufactured at the plant will be sold to customers at reasonable prices in addition to export.

He said a section of people is involved in spreading propaganda against the prepaid metres and making people confused over its use.

Engineer Mohamamd Shafik Uddin, managing director of WZPDCL, said the prepaid metres to be manufactured in the plant will be easily available.

I am so happy to see the metres are being produced in Bangladesh. The technology provider may be a Chinese company but it does not matter because it is not that the Chines company itself invented this. The invention itself was made many decades ago in Europe or Japan and the Chinese adopted it.

A time is coming when our own companies will learn and adopt many technologies that have been invented in some other countries. We do not have to Invent Shoes, it is already there.

So across South Asia the same capitalist ideas are churning out gold from the crystalized sweat of the poor.

nice.

Somewhere out there is a British capitalist making billions of dollars from this.

No one can stop Hasina, Modi and IK from exploiting the masses.

In the capitalist system, anyone who works gets money to live a decent life. However, the standard of living changes with time when the capitalists invest more, the poor group has many job opportunities and efficiency increases with the use of more and more technology and machine.

A nation does not develop in a day and no country has ever developed without inflicting pain to its citizens. However, communism/socialism has failed to uplift the living standard of the people and has flopped. There is no pure socialism even in Castro's Cuba. Cuba survives not on socialism but on remittance from its citizens living in capitalist Florida.

Its just fishy that the same ideas are being marketed in 3rd world countries and all stem from one source.

Why it is so fishy when the idea of capitalism is coming from the developed and rich countries? Tell us one country which is socialist but has developed.

I am not debating that aspect. All i am saying is that these 'smart devices' are from 1970s Britain and now since smart meters are being introduced over there, they are keeping their industry alive by selling these to 3rd world countries.

You do not have to get 3G and then 4G and then 5G. You can go directly to 5G. Hope you get the drift

If your point is correct then Toyota would have introduced the cars 20 years ago that they are building now. Thing is a country progresses with the continuous introduction of new machines and technologies as people are fond of buying them.

Whatever is the version for us today in a country like BD, it is a new version because we are living in a "0" version society without any such product. Let the industries give us 1G now and after a few years 2G and then 3G-----. This is how companies remain busy, the former goods become obsolete requiring people to buy the new version. This is how employment is created capitalist way.

If you call it trick I cannot help it. But, all the technologies progress gradually and the new versions produce employment and income. Money is not something you get from the air. People have to work for it. I see many Japanese housewives throw away goods that are still usable. They buy new ones and people get employment out of it.

A modern economy is just like this. 3rd world countries' economy remains stuck in a quagmire because of wrong thinking by their economists.

When UK is continuously progressing with new fighter jet planes BD is fighting to collect dimes to buy the oldie and outdated F-7s. It must be our fate that we are not bestowed with many meritorious people like you are proving here.
