What's new

Finally 3G policy has been approved

great..so when the world has rolled out 4G...all the retired 3G junk will now be dumped in Pakistan!

There aren't any 4G capable device available in the market as of today but yet we asks for 4G. Which country has implemented 4G that they'll send in their 3G as a junk to Pakistan?

In order to make use of 4G network, you certainly need a 4G capable device - which none is available at the moment, so why implement 4G network for?

And whatever 4G you've heard about is called LTE (Limit Term Evolution) aka 3.5G. It's a standard (of slight evolution) from 3G to 3.5G. We'll see a fully capable 4G networks somewhere in 2015-16.

BS i have 3G in ma village from BSNL....compared to BSNL no other cos you mention have that much 3G coverage. There is not even one good plan in 3G that is affordable and they are already talking about 4G huh? .

Buddy right now I am working on Mumbai region (although I am a transmission guy dnt know much about OMCR, but in our NOC we have all departments) even their all sites are not upgraded. And with this speed we can complete 80% around 2015 or may be later cause in rural areas companies are not able to generate revenue from 2G sites and we are talking about 3G & 4G .

As I said earlier for consumer difference (2G, 3G) is only bandwidth and for more bandwidth we have to pay extra money.

good to hear that!

I hope we can generate couple of billion rupees per year after providing this service

I am not happy to hear the strict law for new investors... this way we may not see the best bidding for this service. I doubt it will be sold very cheaply :(

It's 100 Crore Dollars AFAIK - and the most likely winner of the bidding is Mobilink, which has recently been bought by a Russian firm, yes Russian firm.

3G service is a great experience. I'm using Idea 3G in India. The video calls and net surfing are amazing as you will get upto 1-2mbps downloading speed constantly without getting sweat, though the service charges are slightly high.

ITU consider HSPA+ as 4G

Senators Question 3G License Prices, Move to Stop Auction

By Mehwish Khan · Thursday, Jan 26, 2012

Government of Pakistan’s plan to auction new telecom licenses including 3G/4G and a defunct cellular license through bidding with base price of USD 210 million and USD 155 million respectively, was disapproved when opposition senators warned the government not to proceed with its auction plan without taking them into confidence, reported Business Recorder.

Senator Pervez Rashid of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, (PML-N) who was supported by Haji Adeel, Ilyas Bilour of ANP, Col. Syed Tahir Hussain Mashhadi (retd) of MQM, Prof. hurshid of JI and others, took serious note of an advertisement to auction the Mobile Cellular Licenses/Spectrum (3G,4G/LTE etc) by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

Terming the auction as a ‘license to loot’, the Senators demanded the chair to immediately issue directives to block the move. However, after government’s intervention, the chair referred the matter to Senate’s Standing Committee on Information Technology with the directives to present a report in the house within two days.

They said that $210 million base price of each 1900/2000 MHz (megahertz) 3G license and $31.5 million the earnest money was a peanut, and any effort to auction such an expensive and advanced technology at such a cheap rate would be resisted.

Speaking during the Senate session, Rasheed said that it was astonishing that the base price for the 3G license had been set at $210 million when the 2G license was auctioned for $290 million.

They said that such a deal would be like that of Etisalat, which bought PTCL, is yet to pay $800 million outstanding dues and are paying the said amount after earning the same from the country.

Not getting share of the pie - not getting approved.

Means it will take another 3 years for 3G services to be started in Pakistan because something same happened in India. First there would be spectrum auction, then companies would take another 2 years to build Infrastructure for the system.

mobilink already have built the setup for 3g it will first launch the 3g service in pak then telenor , ufone

These retards don't really know how to pronounce 3G, let alone know the benefits of it. Watch for yourself they call 3G as G3 over and again. Hilarious - with such outstanding politicians.

those senators are ill informed the base price for 2G was 60 million $ when auctioned in 2004 the bids submitted by bidders were closed on envelops & when it opened the highest bid was 290 million $ so this 210 million$ for 3G is base price & am sure it will go in billions when open.

I call it the 'Noora Kushti' of Telco Mafia vs Parliamentarian Mafia, but in the middle the end user is screwed. Such a pity...
