Terrorists stormed a police station in Jammu's Kathua district this morning, killing four men, in the first major terror attack in the state since Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's PDP-BJP coalition government took charge this month.
The two terrorists were killed after a five-hour gun battle, in which nine persons were injured. Of the four dead, one person was a policeman, two were paramilitary personnel, and one was a civilian.
The two men in military uniform, believed to be fidayeen or suicide bombers, had come to the Rajbagh police station around 6 am, sources said. They had commandeered an autorickshaw - the driver is suspected to have been shot.

On their way in, the terrorists also shot the police sentry at the gate and once inside, they opened random fire and holed up inside the building, an officer said.

Around six policemen were also inside the building but on a different floor. Additional troops had to be rushed to the spot and the National Highway had to be closed to traffic. After more than five hours, the encounter was over and the mop-up operations were started.

Sources said the attackers could have been a fresh group of infiltrators who may have crossed the border last night. The police station is located barely 15 km from the International Border.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to the Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police and asked the Union Home Secretary to monitor the situation.

"India took the initiative to talk to Pakistan. We did not even reach a conclusion and the firing happened. Pakistan is a habitual backstabber. Pakistan needs to know that friendship and terror cannot go together," said senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad.
"The operation has been completed, I have given the information to Parliament.Want to congratulate the police and CRPF officers who have been successful in killing both the fidayeen terrorists," Mr Singh later said.
