The loud, grating droning of vuvuzelas has annoyed us all during the World Cup in South Africa. But in the United Arab Emirates, they're more than just an annoyance -- they're unholy.

The country issued a religious edict against the instrument if it exceeds 100 decibels, which is about the same noise level as a passing train.

According to the National, a newspaper in Abu Dhabi, the ruling came after thousands of vuvuzelas were imported into the country for World Cup fans. Officials were worried that fans will start bringing the instruments to local soccer games.

The UAE's General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments said they made the decision based off a study that said human hearing can be damaged if a person exposed to more than 100 decibels.

Officials have also said the blaring sound of the instruments overpowers the crowd's cheering, taking away from the atmosphere. They also said players were having difficulty hearing each other on the field.

Television stations have been inundated by viewer complaints about the continuous drone of the instruments during World Cup. They have tried to lower the instruments' noise with little success.

After realizing their popularity, Dhia el Din, an Abu Dhabi-based businessman initially ordered 10,000 vuvuzelas. He later cancelled his order as the instruments garnered negative press.

He also became alarmed when he discovered the instruments were used by African shamans and witchdoctors.

"I searched on the internet and found some articles regarding it," he said. "I found out that they were used to bring out devils."

Surprisingly, the news makes no mention of the word 'fatwa' except the heading and the link.

BTW, civilized people would have called it a ban, i dunno in which category Daily News would fall.

. . .
Islamic concept is that everything that Harms a human being is haram, since the life and everything else that we are given is a blessing of God so we are supposed to take care of it, thats y suicide and harming one's self or other is haram.

Since this instrument damages human ears, it falls in the same category, and unlike train its basically a useless toy just to cheer with no benefit at all. So its justifiable to call it haram.

BUT BUT BUT, why on earth do we need a fatwa to ban this ??? A fatwa on vuvuzela is same as saying Don't whistle or scream too loud it damages hearing organs, Don't scream in your neighbour's ears it might make him deaf!!!

Of course we know its not good for health and since it brings harm its not good and categorically may fall in haram ones, but we can't go after every next daily life thing, bring a fatwa and call it haram.

It is totally unnecessary and uncalled for.

Its completely worthless for a fatwa to be issued on it. Fatwa is something serious so please don't make fun of it by issuing on every next thing like a speeding ticket.

Fatwa issued against vuvuzela

Abu Dhabi, July 9 (IANS) The vuvuzela, the plastic trumpet made famous by the football World Cup in South Africa, is in trouble in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as the authorities here have issued a fatwa against it.

The plastic trumpet, whose drone has been likened to a swarm of bees, has become the unmistakable background sound of the World Cup.

The fatwa issued by the UAE's General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments says that above 100 decibels, the buzzing sound of the vuvuzela is 'haram', The National newspaper reported Friday.

According to the fatwa, the horns can be used only in stadiums if they pose no harm.

'However, importers and traders must ensure that its power is not over 100 decibels so as to avoid damaging people's hearing,' the ruling declares. 'The vuvuzelas in the markets now could produce sounds reaching 127 decibels.'

Meanwhile, a few traders cancelled orders for more vuvuzelas after they found the horn could be harmfull.

One trader found out that the horns had originally been used by African shamans and witchdoctors. 'I searched on the Internet and found some articles regarding it. They were used to bring out devils,' he said.

Hi
OMG! I thought Vuvuzela would be some thing like a drink having some alcoholic content  .

.
At first I read it as Venezuela,

Maulana sahib is just doing his job, let him issue his fatwa.

Use something more than enough, it becomes a mere word and not something to conform by.

. .
It does not say the word Fatwa in the original UAE article but it is there in Indian source
