FATA development project launched

PESHAWAR – The Rs. 32 billion (US $340m) Tribal Areas Rural to Urban Centres Conversion Initiative (TARUCCI) funded by the Multi-Donor Trust Fund will be launched in Khar, Bajaur Agency, June 30.

“TARUCCI entails the establishment of 14 urban hubs in seven agencies and three Frontier Regions of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas [FATA], aiming to achieve social transformation through urbanisation,” Omar Khan, project director of TARUCCI, told Central Asia Online.

The first of the urban centres in FATA would be established in Khar, he said. The Khar urban hub will cost an estimated US $7m (Rs 659m), and include better roads, health and education facilities, 570 solar-powered streetlights, and renovations to a bus terminal and sports complex.

“Khar’s urban centre would be established under a FATA Urban Centre Project in three years,” Khan said. “Later it would be replicated in Kurram Agency and other areas ... in all seven agencies.”
