It was very common here for desi immigrants to marry old british/Europeans aunty or very young british (easy to trap boht :p) to get permanent settlement but not any more as laws are more toughs these days

a.) it's a common scam which occurs everywhere....he needed a paper marriage so he could get residency/visa

b.) she's absolutely hideous

c.) people do some funny things on planet earth to get what they want to achieve
